CHARACTERS:
Paco Villanueva Rosales :
Teacher of mathematics at Colegio San Antonio. Kind and
respectful of his students. While an expert on his subject
and a passionate teacher, he is always up for a laugh and is
willing to give up his time to help students with academic
and personal issues alike.
Luiz Cabrera :
Pupil at Colegio San Antonio. Highly intelligent, but
equally witty in his own quiet, deadpan way. While sensitive
and emotionally mature, struggles to pursue his romantic
interests due to awkwardness. Does not share his inner
feelings with anybody but his best friend Arturo Marino.
Uses humour as a defence mechanism to avoid uncomfortable
situations.
Fidel Suero :
Pupil at Colegio San Antonio. Orphaned after his father was
killed fighting in the war, and now lives at the school.
Loud and charming, with a rebellious streak and a disdain for
academia. Boyfriend of Isabella Hernandez - the two are very
close, and frequently sneak into each other’s bedrooms at
night. Has strong Loyalist persuasions, but does not
participate in the fighting at Isabella’s behest.
Arturo Marino :
Pupil at Colegio San Antonio. Best friend of Luiz Cabrera.
Very sporty and attractive. Though not particularly
intelligent, is good with his hands and can fix engines and
the like. Known to take the school’s truck out for a spin on
occasion - though never causing harm.
Natalia Robles :
Pupil at Colegio San Antonio. Quiet and studious but very
attractive and friendly. Has a deep-founded crush on Luiz
but the two never seem to be able to gather the courage to
confess their feelings.
Isabella Hernandez :
Pupil at Colegio San Antonio. Like her boyfriend Fidel
Suero, is a war orphan who takes residence in the school’s
boarding facilities. Alternative but sweet and playful.
Plays guitar to an excellent standard. Very creative, and
can frequently be found writing poems and stories, or drawing
pictures.
Gerardo Ara´
ujo :
Works for the local council, and frequently visits the school
as he is a personal friend of Paco Villanueva. Full of
energy despite his seniority, he has a big heart and does his
best to keep the school supported and informed. Full of
stories and is always keen to tell them.

son Nataniel.

Shy but caring, especially of her disabled

Nataniel Ara´
ujo :
Son of Gerardo and Anselma. Suffers from Down’s syndrome, so
requires constant companionship in the form of his mother.
Very optimistic and cheerful.
Brunilda Mart´

Elderly matron of the school. A strict disciplinarian when
it is due, but understanding and reasonable. Ends up as the
subject of many playful practical jokes due to her failing
sight and mobility. While she is quick to dish out
punishments when such situations arise, she always sees the
funny side and gets along well with all the students.

Opening Classroom

TEXT: BADAJOZ, 19TH MARCH 1936
FADE IN:
INT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO, BADAJOZ
AFTERNOON

19TH MARCH 1936,

Setting is a classroom. Mr Villanueva is at the front with a
large blackboard, on which are an array of mathematical
equations and diagrams. Desks are spread across the room,
with two pupils to a desk. Notable pairings are Fidel and
Isabella, Luiz and Arturo...
PACO
...and therefore by induction,
we can show that De Moivre’s
theorem is true for positive
integer values of n. Can anyone
suggest how we might do
something similar for when n is
negative?
-CLASS*mumbling*
LUIZ
Could you... put it on the
bottom of the fraction and write
negative n? So it becomes
positive, and solve it in the
same way?
PACO
Yes, but there is a bit more to
it than that. You will have to
multiply the top and bottom by
the conjugate in order for it to
cancel...
FIDEL
psst
Hey,
Bella?
*
*
ISABELLA
Uhuh?
FIDEL
Watch this!
There is a sound like the stretching of elastic, followed by
a soft thud.
Ah!

ARTURO
What was that!?

4

Bullseye!

ISABELLA
Haha...

ARTURO
Game on, maric´
on! Luiz, you’re
on munitions!
LUIZ
Give me five seconds to get this
copied down...
ARTURO
Fidel - a thousand pesetas if
you can get one into
Villanueva’s coffee!
FIDEL
That’s a tough angle...
ISABELLA
Maybe try rebounding it off the
blackboard?
FIDEL
Hmmm...
NATALIA
Sir?
PACO
Yes Natalia?
NATALIA
Do you think there’s going to be
a war?
PACO
...
NATALIA
Since they banned the Falange,
there’s been so much fighting in
the streets. I hear it’s much
worse even as close as Seville.
PACO
Many people aren’t happy with
the result of the election.
They disagree with the Popular
Front’s ideas. That doesn’t
mean there’ll be another war.
NATALIA
I heard General Sanjurjo wants
to start a coup. They had a
conference in Madrid - lots of
powerful people are on his side.

5
PACO
The whole world saw what
happened last time, and nobody
wants it to happen again.
LUIZ
But it’s not just here in Spain.
It’s clear that many countries
don’t like the idea of
communism. If the rebels want
support, they can probably count
on Britain. Hitler and
Mussolini will help out too.
PACO
I think all we can do for now is
let the politicians argue it
out. We’re just civilians after
all - I’m too old to fight; you
lot are all too young.
FIDEL
I’ll fight!
ISABELLA
No you will not! I need you
here to help me cope with Mr.
Villanueva’s maths lessons!
PACO
Haha, be thankful I don’t set
you double homework for that
joke, Isabella!
LUIZ
None of us need to fight - we’ll
have Rojo to defend the city!
-CLASSHahaha!
PACO
Probably a note to finish the
lesson on, then. You have the
assignments - I want them in by
Tuesday if you can.
The students get up and gradually filter out of the room.
Paco walks to his desk and takes the final gulp of his
coffee.
PACO
*cough* What’s this?

Paper?

PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player may now exit the room into the upstairs hallway.
When passing various invisible triggers, dialogue will be
presented via speech-bubble from various students; lines

6
including "Good afternoon, Sir!" and "Afternoon, Mr.
Villanueva!" and the like.
Interacting with certain classroom doors will give the
message:
PACO
There’s a lesson going on, I had
better not disturb...
Interacting with others will allow the player access to the
classroom. There will be little notable material within
these classrooms. In general the player is free to explore
the school. However, interacting with the basement door
gives the following message:
PACO
The basement door.

It’s locked.

The principal objective is to make one’s way to Paco’s
office. Upon entering, the following message is given:
PACO
Ah, back in my office with a
good hour-or-so to get some
marking done.
Interacting with the window gives the following message:
PACO
A glorious view over the city of
Badajoz.
Interacting with the bed gives the following message:
PACO
As much as I would love to, I
really should get this marking
done.
Interacting with the desk allows Paco to sit down in the
chair and begin marking. After a brief time, there is a
loud, frenetic knocking on the door.
PACO
Who is it?
ARTURO
Mr. Villanueva - It’s me,
Arturo!
PACO
Come on in, Arturo.
Arturo appears in the doorway.
ARTURO
Sir! There’s something in the
dormitory - like a huge rat!

7
PACO
Really? We’d better go deal
with it then!
Paco and Arturo leave the room together. Once they are in
the hallway, the following dialogue occurs:
ARTURO
Luiz and I tried to stamp it but
it keeps getting away, it’s a
really big bastard...
The two then continue on into the boys’ dormitory, where Luiz
stands in the middle of the room.
LUIZ
Mr. Villanueva! It’s under
that one by the door! See if
you can scare it out from
underneath so Arturo or I can
stamp it...
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player now performs the ’Dormitory Beds’ puzzle.
Upon completion, the following dialogue is given, depending
on who crunched the rat:
IF ARTURO CRUNCHED THE RAT:
Haha!

ARTURO
Gotcha!

PACO
Good going, Arturo. I’ll leave
Brunilda to get rid of it - I
don’t quite fancy touching it
myself...
IF LUIZ CRUNCHED THE RAT:
LUIZ
Ugh, little bastard got his guts
all up my leg! I’ll need to go
change my trousers...
PACO
Good going, Luiz. I’ll leave
Brunilda to get rid of it - I
don’t quite fancy touching it
myself...
The following dialogue then occurs regardless of who crunched
the rat:

8
ARTURO
Glad it’s dealt with - I just
came in here to use the
bathroom.
PACO
Is that where it came from?
ARTURO
I think so, but I can’t be
certain. I just heard it behind
me while I was... you know.
PACO
I had better do a quick sweep
then to make sure there aren’t
any more of the cabrones. You
two get along to lessons.
Luiz and Arturo leave the room.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
Interacting with the main door gives the following message:
PACO
I had better check the toilets
to make sure there are no more
rats.
The player may now leave the room through the back entrance
and take the staircase down to the outhouses. Interacting
with the door to the girls’ toilets gives the following
message:
PACO
Arturo reckons the rat came from
the boys’ toilets - I should
check there first.
Interacting with the door to the boys’ toilets allows the
player access. The room is a gloomy affair, but kept well
cleaned.
Interacting with the small hole gives the following message:
PACO
Looks like this is where the rat
came from. I can hear faint
noises from inside but it
doesn’t sound like they’re too
close. I’ll tell Brunilda to
put out some traps and maybe
some poison. In the meantime, I
have work to do...
The screen fades to black.

Paco woken by thumping

FADE IN:
INT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO, BADAJOZ
HOURS OF MORNING

20TH MARCH 1936, EARLY

Paco is asleep in his bed in his office. It is nearly pitch
black, but with a ray of moonlight slicing through the
window.
???
*thump thump*
There is a momentary pause.
???
thump
thump
*
*
PACO
Whaa..?
...
???
*thump thump thump*
Paco gets out of bed and walks into the centre of the room,
towards the door.
PACO
Hello?
There is a silence lasting a few seconds.
PACO
That isn’t the sound of someone
knocking on the door... It
sounded more like it came from
below me, and it was too loud to
be those rats again. Is someone
awake downstairs? I had better
check on the students as well,
in case someone’s fallen out of
bed.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player can leave the room and enter the boarding
corridor. Interacting with the door to Matron’s office gives
the message:
PACO
Locked. I can hear Brunilda
snoring inside.
Interacting with the door to the boys’ dormitory gives the
message:

10
PACO
Just faint snoring. I don’t
want to risk waking them up by
opening the door.
Interacting with the door to the girls’ dormitory gives the
message:
PACO
No sound. I don’t want to risk
waking them up by opening the
door.
Interacting with the main door before visiting both
dormitories gives the message:
PACO
I should probably check the
students are alright first.
Interacting with the main door after visiting both
dormitories allows the player into the main school building.
???
thump
thump
thump*
*
PACO
There it is again, and it’s
definitely below me.
The player may enter any of the classrooms on this level.
Entering a particular classroom, the player encounters a
blackboard with the ’Naomi x Seiko’ easter egg written in
chalk. Interacting with this gives the following message:
PACO
Naomi and Seiko? I don’t know
what that means...
The player can also now make their way towards the staircase
and descend to the ground floor.
PACO
Alrighty then. I should
probably have a look around.
The player is free to wander around on this floor as well.
Interacting with the basement door before the invisible
trigger has been activated gives the following message:
PACO
Locked.
Upon stepping on an invisible trigger, the following message
is given:
???
*thump thump thump thump thump*

11
PACO
Hold on... that still sounded
like it was coming from below
me. Could someone be down in
the basement?
Interacting with the basement door after the invisible
trigger has been activated gives the message:
PACO
The basement door, but it’s
locked. I guess nobody went in
through the door, but maybe an
animal burrowed in and got
trapped? I think there’s a key
in the school office.
Entering the school office and searching a particular desk
after this message has been activated yields a ’basement key’
item and gives the following message:
PACO
Hmmm... this looks like it
could fit the basement door...
Interacting with the filing cabinets gives the following
message:
PACO
Nothing in here but school
records and old textbooks.
Interacting with one of the other desks gives the following
message:
PACO
Nothing of interest anywhere in
this desk.
Interacting with the basement door after the ’basement key’
item has been acquired allows the player access to the
basement.
PACO
Pretty dusty down here.
The basement is pitch black, and the only way to see is to
locate the lightswitch and activate it. Among the reams of
boxes and papers, the ’SCP-173’ easter egg can be located.
Interacting with this gives the following message:
PACO
Some old concrete statue. Looks
to have been here since long
before I started teaching.
Interacting with the old door gives the following message:

12
PACO
Old maintenance tunnels under
the city. This door’s been
blocked up for years. In all
honesty it would be fascinating
to take a look myself some time,
but this is one heavy-ass crate
in the way; it would take two or maybe even three people to
shift it. Even then, I imagine
the door has been boarded or
nailed shut from the other side.
Interacting with the mysterious box gives the following
message:
PACO
What’s this? An old box... The
patterns are intriguing, but
it’s a bit dim to get a good
look at them. Something small
rattles inside. Nothing seems
amiss down here, I suppose maybe
I’ll find out the source of that
banging in the morning.
The screen fades to black.

Paco examines the pieces of the ring

FADE IN:
INT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO, BADAJOZ
MORNING

20TH AUGUST 1936,

Back in Paco’s office, Paco is seen sitting at his desk with
the box in front of him.
PACO
This really is a wonderful piece
of craftsmanship. Very
intricate design. The lock
seems complicated but...
The player now performs the ’Locking Mechanism’ puzzle.
There is a soft click.
PACO
Aha!
Hmmm... small pieces of metal,
decorated with the same
intricate patterns as the box.
They look like broken pieces of
a ring or bracelet, but they
don’t fit together. I guess
some are missing. Still, they
could be valuable. I don’t know
what sort of metal this is but
it feels heavy like gold. Much
stronger though - gold is kind
of malleable.
Anyway, *yawn* I had better get
down for breakfast.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player may now exit the room and enter the boarding
corridor. Here stands Fidel. Interacting with Fidel gives
the following dialogue:
FIDEL
Yawn
Good
morning
Sir...
*
*
PACO
Morning, Fidel. Are you
alright? You seem tired...
FIDEL
Ah yeah kinda, I didn’t get much
sleep last night.

14
PACO
Really, was there a thumping
noise keeping you awake? I
heard the same thing.
FIDEL
Thumping noise? No...
hear anything.

I didn’t

PACO
How strange...
The player can continue into the main building and down the
stairs. On the ground floor, Isabella can be found slumped
in a chair. Interacting with Isabella gives the following
dialogue:
PACO
Isabella, hadn’t you better be
getting breakfast?
Ah!

Sir!

ISABELLA
You startled me...

PACO
Not get enough sleep last night?
ISABELLA
Um... Not really. I was
thinking about what we were
discussing in class - about the
war.
PACO
Best not to worry yourself about
it, Isabella. Say, did you hear
any strange thumping noises last
night?
ISABELLA
Oh! Um... no. I didn’t hear
anything Sir!
PACO
Okay, well come on and get some
breakfast in you before lessons
start.

Natalia is woken in her sleep

FADE IN:
INT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO, BADAJOZ
HOURS OF MORNING

29TH MARCH 1936, EARLY

Paco’s office. It is very dark, but the whole room has a
faint red tint. The window is open.
PACO
!
...
I understand. It’s just a
sudden clarity. I know how the
pieces fit together.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player can only interact with the desk at this point.
Doing so gives the following dialogue:
PACO
Hmmm...
The pieces appear to connect
seamlessly and without glue,
like they’re magnetic.
The player now performs the ’Assembling the Ring’ puzzle.
PACO
That should do it.
There is a very deep and ominous rumbling, which is quiet to
the point of being negligible.
PACO
It’s a very pretty ring - the
way the patterns meander around
the edge, like nothing I’ve ever
seen.
There is a clash of thunder - the flash illuminates the room
briefly and is visible through the window. The sound of rain
fades in.
PACO
Ah shit, better close the
window.
The player may now interact with the window. Doing so closes
the window, dulling the sound of the rain. After a short
pause, there is another flash of lightning followed by a
distant female scream.
PACO
!

16
The player can interact with the door to exit the room into
the boarding corridor. The doors to the two dormitories are
closed, while the door to Brunilda’s office is open.
Interacting with the door to the boys’ dormitory gives the
following message:
PACO
That was definitely a girl’s
scream - no point going in the
boys’ dormitory.
Interacting with the open door to Brunilda’s office gives the
following message:
PACO
Brunilda isn’t in there.
Interacting with the main door gives the following message:
PACO
I had better check out the
source of that scream.
Interacting with the door to the girls’ dormitory allows the
player access to the girls’ dormitory.
Most of the girls are sitting up in bed - though some are
lying down. Natalia is in bed crying and Isabella is
comforting her. Brunilda is sat on a stool next to the bed.
NATALIA
*sob*
BRUNILDA
You’d better have a good reason
for waking me, Natalia.
PACO
Hey, what’s going on?
NATALIA
I really don’t feel right...
*hic*
PACO
Natalia what happened?
NATALIA
The lightning, Sir...
BRUNILDA
You are afraid of the lightning?
mierda...
NATALIA
No, out on the balcony... there
was a man. I saw his silhouette
when the lightning flashed.

17

A man?

PACO
I’ll go take a look.

PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
Interacting with the door to the balcony opens it. There is
no room transition as the balcony forms part of the same
room. Nothing but trees are visible below. The sound of
rain is more pronounced, and there are occasional flashes of
lightning. Stepping towards the edge of the balcony gives
the following short cutscene:
PACO
There’s nobody here.
Paco then turns to go back inside.
PACO
...
Though I do feel very uneasy...
The player can now return to Natalia’s bed and interact with
it to generate the following dialogue:
PACO
There’s nobody out there.
BRUNILDA
You see, little one.
just a dream.
Mmm...

It was

NATALIA
I guess so.

PACO
You feel ok to get back to
sleep?
NATALIA
I don’t know, Sir. It’s more
than just the fear - it’s a
whole different sensation, like
there is something seriously
wrong in this room.
ISABELLA
It’s ok, Nat, I’ll sleep in here
with you tonight.
NATALIA
Thanks, Bella.
Suddenly Luiz enters the room.
LUIZ
Is everything ok? I heard a
scream and running footsteps.

18
BRUNILDA
Out, boy! This is the girls’
dormitory!
NATALIA
It’s ok, Brunilda.
Nat...

LUIZ
are you ok?

NATALIA
I’m fine, Luiz. Thanks for
asking.
LUIZ
Ok... that’s good. Do you need
anything? Some water?
NATALIA
Don’t worry about it Luiz, go
get some sleep.
Ok.

LUIZ
Good night!
NATALIA

Night.
Luiz leaves.
PACO
I’ll be just down the hall if
you need anything. Brunilda
too.
Thanks, Sir.
ok.

ISABELLA
I think we’ll be

PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player can leave the room and enter the boarding
corridor. From here they can re-enter Paco’s office.
Interacting with the bed allows Paco to lie down and go to
sleep. There is a long pause during which there are three
lightning flashes, each casting a rectangle of light on the
floor through the window. On the third flash, the shadow of
a tall, misshapen man is visible in the patch of light.
The screen fades slowly to black.

Paco talks with Leonardo and Casimiro

FADE IN:
EXT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO, BADAJOZ
AFTERNOON

30TH MARCH 1936,

LEONARDO
...I’m afraid not, Paco. It
isn’t a style I recognise could be Mayan or Greek, but it
doesn’t really seem all too
reminiscent of either. Where
did you find it?
PACO
In the basement, in a box with
the same sort of patterns.
LEONARDO
A wooden box?
PACO
Yes, with a locking mechanism
and everything.
LEONARDO
That throws things off track,
because wood will rot over time.
That means it must be a fairly
recent creation. A wee spell
before your time, Dr. Bautista
took some students off to
Yucat´
an to experience some
proper archaeology. He managed
to sneak back some souvenirs
which he kept in the basement.
I imagine this is one of those
souvenirs.
PACO
So this is Mayan then?
LEONARDO
That would be the best guess,
but like I said it doesn’t
really seem to look all too
Mayan.
PACO
Do you think it could be made of
gold?

20
LEONARDO
Almost certainly not pure gold.
Feels too sturdy. Probably an
alloy like Tumbaga, which they
found all around South America.
Mostly copper. My guess is that
it has several additional metals
in to strengthen it.
PACO
Why would they have bothered
strengthening a piece of
jewellery?
LEONARDO
Looks too big to be a jewellery
ring, unless this particular
Mayan had very fat fingers.
Ornamental I think. Sometimes
the alloys can be more valuable
than the metals themselves it’s not unheard of. The
techniques involved made some
alloys particularly artisan and
they were valuable beyond
measure.
There is the distant sound of bell ringing.
PACO
Right, I’d better be off.
Thanks for the help, Leo.
LEONARDO
Don’t mention it Paco.
Mysteries like this always
intrigue me.
Paco leaves the room.
LEONARDO [THOUGHTS]
Paco seems very attached to that
ring. Then again, who can blame
him when it presents such a
conundrum!
The screen then fades to black, before fading in again on
Paco, who is standing outside the staff room in the corridor.
PACO [THOUGHTS]
Now Casimiro wanted to speak to
me about Arturo’s behaviour in
lessons. He should be over in
the chemistry department right
now.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
The player may now make their way over to the chemistry

21
department. Interacting with the door to the laboratory
allows the player access.
PACO
Casimiro is probably in his
office in the prep room.
The player can make their way across the laboratory and enter
the prep room door on the opposite side. From here they may
enter Dr. Ybarra’s office.
PACO
Hmmm, he doesn’t seem to be
in... I’m sure he said to come
around now..?
Upon returning to the prep room and taking a few steps, a
small window on the far wall suddenly shatters.
PACO
!
Interacting with the window at this point gives the following
message:
It just...

PACO
shattered...

The player may now leave the prep room and enter the main
laboratory. Upon taking a few steps, a bottle of red liquid
falls off one of the benches and the fluid spills onto the
floor, blocking Paco’s escape.
PACO
Oh shit!
A faint moaning can suddenly be heard from the prep room.
Paco must now escape the laboratory, avoiding the puddles of
red liquid that splash in front of him and around him. Upon
exiting back into the corridor, Paco is confronted by Dr.
Ybarra.
Paco!

CASIMIRO
You look flustered..?

PACO
Dr. Ybarra, the chemicals in
your laboratory! They’ve
spilled all over the floor!
CASIMIRO
Ah, bloody bastard kids. Spend
all their time playing with
their willies they can’t hold a
flask without shaking it up and
down.

22
PACO
No, they were just falling off
the benches on their own!
Eh?

CASIMIRO
Better assess the damage...

The pair re-enter the laboratory to find it undisturbed. The
chemicals are still in their bottles on the benches, and the
floor is clear.
PACO [THOUGHTS]
What the hell?
CASIMIRO
Hmph, looks alright to me...
PACO
Yeah...
There is a pause.
CASIMIRO
Weren’t you coming to see me
about Fidel?
I think...
Arturo?

PACO
you said it was

CASIMIRO
Ah yes, the class twat.
PACO
Rings a bell.
CASIMIRO
That boy really needs to pull
his bloody finger out and start
doing some work.
PACO
I will have a word with him
tonight...
CASIMIRO
...And some of the shit he gets
up to in my lessons is really
just not on!
PACO
Like what?
CASIMIRO
Come on into the office and I’ll
tell you.
The two then head into the prep room, as the screen fades to
black.

HOURS OF MORNING

31ST MARCH 1936, EARLY

It is night-time in the boys’ dorm room. It is pitch black
save for a sliver of moonlight coming through the balcony
doorway.
ARTURO
Man, Ybarra doesn’t get it...
Chemistry should be about cool
experiments and explosions...
There is a brief pause, followed by two gunshots and a
distant feminine scream.
ARTURO
!
Arturo, in his pyjamas, climbs out of bed and goes to Luiz
who is sleeping in the adjacent bed.
Luiz!

ARTURO
Wake up!

LUIZ
Nngh...
...
Fuck off Fabio...
ARTURO
Fabio..?
Mierda...
After a brief moment, there is another scream.
DISTANT VOICE
Come back you little bitch!
There is another gunshot.
ARTURO
Damn that lady needs help!
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF ARTURO.
The player may move out onto the balcony and interact with
the railing. However, doing so yields only the following
message:
ARTURO
It’s too dark to see anything
from here.

25
Interacting with the door to the boarding corridor before
picking up the lantern gives the following message:
ARTURO
It’s dark out. I should take a
lantern.
Interacting with the lantern allows Arturo to pick it up and
take a brief moment to light it.
The player may now exit the dormitory into the boarding
corridor. Interacting then with the Door to Paco’s office
gives the following message:
ARTURO
No point waking Mr. Villanueva.
He would tell me to stay in bed,
away from the gunfire.
Interacting with the door to Brunilda’s office gives the
following message:
ARTURO
Brunilda still snoring inside.
Evidently the noises didn’t wake
her up.
The player may enter the rest of the school but searching
around inside will not yield anything. Interacting with the
front door gives the following message:
ARTURO
The scream came from the other
side of the building. I should
check the back door.
Interacting with the back door allows the player access to
the scrub land at the back of the school. After stepping on
an invisible trigger, distant (albeit louder than before)
footsteps can be heard.
Fernando!
school!

DISTANT VOICES
A light over by the
ARTURO

!
Arturo quickly extinguishes the lantern.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF ARTURO.
The player must find somewhere to hide before Fernando finds
them. Fernando carries a lantern and will shoot Arturo dead
if he gets within a few meters of him, and Arturo is not in
cover. If Arturo is in cover, he can still be found if
Fernando walks right up next to him, or looks at him from a
certain angle. Examples of hiding spots include bushes and
low, broken brick walls. If Fernando has not found Arturo

26
after about thirty seconds the following dialogue plays out:
FERNANDO
There’s nobody here, Raf!
RAFAEL
Fuck’s sake, Fernan. The co˜
no
must have gone inside!
FERNANDO
Are we going in after her or
not?
RAFAEL
No...
Best not break into the school.
She’ll turn up sooner or later;
it’s not like she’ll be able to
get far on her own with a bullet
in her leg.
FERNANDO
If you say so. Man it would’ve
been nice to have caught her
though... she set my loins
burning...
RAFAEL
Fernan are you sure you haven’t
just pissed yourself again?
FERNANDO
Fuck off Raf.
Fernando then departs.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF ARTURO.
The player may then return into the school building.
ARTURO
I should re-light the lantern...
As Arturo re-lights the lantern, its sudden glare illuminates
a trail of bloody footprints on the floor. The right foot in
each case is considerably messier, and is preceded by a long
smear, as if the foot was dragged a distance before being set
down. The player may follow the footsteps a short distance
before finding Alejandra sitting slumped against the wall in
one of the classrooms.
ARTURO
!
ALEJANDRA
*whimper*
Alejandra slowly edges away, along the wall.

27
ARTURO
It’s ok!
...
ALEJANDRA
...
Arturo takes a few paces towards Alejandra.
ALEJANDRA
*sob*
ARTURO
Hey it’s ok...
Arturo goes and crouches in front of where Alejandra is
sitting. He gently takes her leg in his hands.
Agh!

ALEJANDRA
*sputter*

ARTURO
Ah shit sorry...
No it’s...

ALEJANDRA
alright...

ARTURO
...
You need some bandages. I’ll go
get some quickly. Keep pressure
on your... hole...
ALEJANDRA
...
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF ARTURO.
The player must go to the medical room and retrieve a first
aid kit, which are located in one of the cabinets. After
retrieving it, they return to the classroom and rejoin
Alejandra.
Hey...

ARTURO
Miss?

Arturo shakes Alejandra.
ARTURO
Miss? Are you alright!?
Shit...
Whaa..?

ALEJANDRA
cough
*
*

ARTURO
Oh thank God...

28
ALEJANDRA
Mhhmm...
Arturo places the first aid kit on the ground next to him and
opens it. Retrieving a bandage, he begins to wrap
Alejandra’s leg.
ALEJANDRA
Agh!

*sob*
ARTURO

Sorry!
It’s...

ALEJANDRA
fine. Let me do it.
ARTURO

...
There is a pause.
ARTURO
What is your name?
ALEJANDRA
Alejandra.
ARTURO
That’s a really beautiful name.
ALEJANDRA
...
ARTURO
...My name’s Arturo.
ALEJENDRA
...
Alejandra then curls up in a foetal position.
ALEJANDRA
*sob*
Hey...

ARTURO
it’s ok.

Arturo moves to sit next to Alejandra and places a hand on
her head. There is a brief pause.
ARTURO
Have you got anywhere to go?
ALEJANDRA
sob
I
don’t
know...
*
*
ARTURO
...
You can stay here if you want.

29
ALEJANDRA
I don’t think...
ARTURO
Just until your leg gets better,
or things calm down out there.
ALEJANDRA
I...
ARTURO
I can take a mattress down to
the basement, and some books and
stuff. Nobody need know you are
here, if you’re that afraid of
those thugs that were chasing
you...
ALEJANDRA
...
ARTURO
...
Sorry. I just don’t want you to
feel scared any more.
...
Thank you.

ALEJANDRA

ARTURO
I had better get that blood
cleaned up...
The screen then fades to black.

Arturo and Alejandra are in the basement together. Alejandra
is lying on a mattress covered in a thin blanket. Arturo is
sat on the side of the mattress.
ARTURO
...So why were those men chasing
you?
ALEJANDRA
...
My father... he is supporting
Sanjurjo’s coup. He’s angered
some important people and now
they’re out for revenge.
ARTURO
Damn, and you didn’t even have
anything to do with that!
ALEJANDRA
They know that though, and
that’s the worst part. My
father has dragged me into this
because he is too passionate
about things he shouldn’t get
involved in. That Fernando
wanted to rape me.
ARTURO
...
You shouldn’t put all the blame
on your father...
ALEJANDRA
I know that, but I do anyway.
ARTURO
That’s what’s so fucked up about
war. Even families can turn

ALEJANDRA
I just don’t know who I can

ARTURO
You can trust me.
There is an extended pause.

the following message is given:

FADE IN:
EXT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO, BADAJOZ
EVENING

13TH AUGUST 1936,

The boarding students - along with Paco and Brunilda - are
sat outside around a fire in the middle of the school’s
playground. Though it is not particularly dark, the fire
still casts a warm glow over those sat closest.
ARTURO
...And it was then that I
realised that you were standing
right behind me, Sir.
LUIZ
Oh dear.
PACO
At least I let you finish before
I gave you a right bollocking!
ARTURO
Would have been quite messy if
you had just dragged me inside
right then and there!
PACO
What is it you aim for anyway?
ARTURO
There’s a flowerpot on the grass
down below. You have to fill it
up - but it’s harder than it
sounds because there’s a
drainage hole in the bottom.
PACO
I always thought there was a
funny smell down there.
ISABELLA
You boys are disgusting!
FIDEL
Disgusting eh? You mean like
that time you ate the dodgy
avocado...
ISABELLA
Fidel no!
FIDEL
Hahaha!

34
PACO
I think I’d better be getting to
bed. The next few days are
going to be rough - we’ll need
our sleep. They reckon Yag¨

won’t hit the city until
tomorrow night, but I’ll stay
alert and come running if he
starts early. I want everybody
ready to move into the basement
at a moment’s notice - no time
to get dressed so it might be
wise if you sleep in your
clothes.
ISABELLA
Ok Sir, we’ll stay out here a
little longer.
PACO
Ok, just make sure you keep the
fire under control - I don’t
want anybody getting burned.
Some of the other pupils go inside at this point.

After a brief pause, Fidel takes out a cigarette.
FIDEL
Arturo, Natalia, cigarette?
ARTURO
May end up being my last ever.
NATALIA
Go on then.
Fidel, Arturo and Natalia go to light their cigarettes.
ISABELLA
Fidel, no kisses if your mouth
tastes like smoking!
FIDEL
Hmmm... do I want to spend my
final moments smoking or
kissing? What a dilemma.
After a brief pause, Fidel returns the cigarette to his pack
and kisses Isabella passionately.
LUIZ
I’ll have that cigarette if
you’re not going to...
FIDEL
Wow, Luiz asking for a
cigarette? Things must be dire!

35
Fidel hands the cigarette to Luiz and lights it for him.
LUIZ
*cough*
FIDEL
Haha, don’t worry - you get used

There is an extended pause as Arturo, Natalia and Luiz all

NATALIA
Agreed.
ARTURO

FIDEL
I’ve spoken to Paquito. He’s

to Portugal first thing tomorrow

seats for us if we want them.
ISABELLA
I don’t know, Fidel - what about
everybody else? They can’t come
as well?
FIDEL
I already asked - Paquito says
we’ll be packed like sardines as
it is. Also; if it looks too
much like we’re fugitives, we’re
more likely to get caught.
ISABELLA
How do you know we won’t be
safer here? Mr. Villanueva
reckons Yag¨

the civilians, let alone those
in a school.
FIDEL
I don’t know that, Bella, but I
do know I won’t be able to live
in a city controlled by
fascists. Any one of them
could’ve been the one who killed
my father.
ISABELLA
I don’t think it’s a good idea,
but I’m sticking with you
whatever you choose.
FIDEL
I want you to be safe, Bella.
If you think that means staying
here, away from me, then so be
it. I just don’t know how I’d
cope if you died.

FADE IN:
EXT. ROAD TO ELVAS, PORTUGAL

15TH AUGUST 1936, MORNING

The truck, with Paquito driving and a host of other Badajoz
residents in the back, speeds along the barren, sandy road,
kicking up a dust cloud in its wake.
FIDEL
We did it Bella, we’re in
Portugal!
ISABELLA
I love you, Fidel...
Up ahead, two soldiers become visible and hold out their
hands in a "stop" gesture. A third soldier is visible behind
a makeshift sandbag wall, erected across the whole width of
the road, with a large mounted machinegun.
FIDEL
That’s not good...
PAQUITO
Dammit!
FIDEL
Hold my hand Bella.
ISABELLA
...
SOLDIER 1 (SHOUTING)
Stop the truck!
SOLDIER 2 (SHOUTING)
Stop your truck or we will
shoot!
The truck slows, and Paquito leans his head into the back
where his passengers are seated.
PAQUITO
We are Nationalists from M´
erida,
fleeing from loyalist
resistance.
The first soldier advances to the truck’s cabin, his hand
poised on his gun. The second walks round the truck to the
back and inspects the passengers. The third soldier keeps
the machinegun trained on Paquito in the driver’s seat.
SOLDIER 1
Get out of the truck!

39
PAQUITO
Take it easy my friend, we are
Nationalists from...
SOLDIER 1

Paquito cautiously opens the door of the truck and steps out
onto the sand.
PAQUITO

Before Paquito is able to finish, the soldier draws his
pistol and shoots Paquito in the head, killing him instantly.
His blood sprays out of the back of his head and over the
truck, and he collapses backwards onto the ground.
Fidel immediately stands up.
FIDEL

SOLDIER 2

SOLDIER 2

FIDEL

The second soldier grabs Isabella and pulls her out of the
truck. He punches her in the face and forces her to kneel
down on the sand in front of him.
FIDEL
Bella!
Fidel leaps out of the truck and goes to tackle the soldier.
The soldier draws his gun and shoots Fidel, who is thrown
backwards by the force of the bullet. He falls on his back
on the ground, a small pool of blood forming around his left
bicep.
FIDEL
Agh!

ISABELLA

Isabella breaks free of the soldier’s grip and dashes over to
where Fidel is lying.

ISABELLA
I don’t want you to die for me
Fidel - just do what they say so
we can both survive this!
Enough!

SOLDIER 1
Get in the truck!

With Isabella’s help, Fidel stands and climbs, with
difficulty, into the truck. Isabella sits on the seat,
cradling the quivering Fidel in her arms.
ISABELLA
He needs a bandage!
SOLDIER 2
Don’t worry, that won’t be
necessary...
The first soldier opens the truck door and gets into the
cabin. The second climbs into the back with the passengers.

EXT. PLAZA DE TOROS, BADAJOZ
AFTERNOON

15TH AUGUST 1936, LATE

Paquito’s truck, driven by the soldier, pulls up in front of
the bullring. Several other soldiers approach and the
prisoners are roughly brought out of the back and made to
stand in a huddle in front of the entrance. All the guards
have their rifles ready lest any of the prisoners try to
escape.
SOLDIER 1
Sir, Loyalists caught escaping

MAJ. ANTONIO CASTEJ´

Yes sir.

SOLDIER 1
Move it you lot!

The soldier hits Fidel in the back with the butt of his gun,
causing him to stumble forward.
FIDEL
Agh!
The prisoners slowly walk through the entrance to the ring.
There are obvious blood spatters in the sand and bodies lined
up in a row against one side. A host of other prisoners
stand huddled in the middle.
Fuck!

FIDEL
They’re going to execute
ISABELLA

Oh God!
The groups coalesce in the centre of the ring, and the guards
retreat back to the entrance, still holding their rifles up.
There is a great deal of movement amongst the prisoners as
they await their fate.
FIDEL
I won’t let them kill you Bella,
even if I have to take all the
bullets myself!
ISABELLA

Fidel and Isabella embrace.

MAJ. ANTONIO CASTEJ´

The air is suddenly ablaze with the sound of gunshots, and
bullets are fired from all directions by soldiers in the
stands. Within a few seconds, all of the prisoners in the
ring are killed, including Fidel and Isabella. They collapse
on the ground next to each other, bloodied and riddled with
bullet holes.
(Sad Spanish guitar theme begins to play)

Paco is chased by monster

FADE IN:
INT. COLEGIO SAN ANTONIO
MORNING

15TH AUGUST 1936, EARLY HOURS OF

Paco, Brunilda, Natalia and Luiz are sat in the basement
among with a small host of other pupils. They are lit by the
light of several small lamps placed around the room.
LUIZ
Arturo should be back by now...
PACO
Dani’s probably just having a
hard time - you know what it’s
like when you’re scared.
LUIZ
I don’t know about you Sir, but
when I’m scared, I find
everything comes out much more
easily - intentionally or
otherwise...
PACO
The gunfire’s all but stopped
now anyway. I think it may be
safe to go back upstairs. I’m
starting to feel claustrophobic.
LUIZ
Really? I’m starting to find it
pretty cosy...
At this moment, Arturo enters through the basement door. In
his wake is a small boy, who quickly scurries back to the
other students.
PACO
What’s it like outside, Arturo?
ARTURO
I couldn’t see much, but I think
the shooting has died down. It
seems to be less resistance and
more surrender. You can hear
the odd bursts of gunfire like
in firing squads...
PACO
...
Ok. Luiz, Natalia, Arturo - you
take everyone back upstairs.
Get them settled into bed. Go
with them, Brunilda. I’ll get
everything tidied up down here.

47
NATALIA
On it Sir...
The screen fades to black, before fading in again to show
Paco emerging from the basement door. The corridor is
brightly lit, in stark contrast to the view through the
windows. Paco takes a few paces down the corridor before
stopping.
Hmmm...

PACO
something’s not right.

After a brief pause, the lights in the corridor begin to
flicker. A very deep, low hum begins to well up, accompanied
by the sound of whispering in unintelligible languages and
faint screams. The lights at the far end of the corridor
turn off completely. They are followed by the next set of
lights along, getting gradually closer to Paco each time. As
this occurs, the hum and the whispers get louder.
PACO
Mierda!
Paco quickly darts back into the basement.
PLAYER ASSUMES CONTROL OF PACO.
During this sequence, there is continuous and intense banging
on the door - enough to shake dust and plaster. The
whispering is very audible and the screams are louder and
more anguished. A timer is visible at the top of the screen,
counting down for one minute. At the end of this timer, the
monster bursts into the room and moves towards Paco at a very
fast speed. It does not matter where he is in the basement the monster will always find him. If it reaches Paco, he is
killed and the game must be restarted from the corridor
scene.
The objective is to escape. To achieve this, the player must
interact with the box in front of the old door. This allows
the box to be slowly pushed aside, over a period of about ten
seconds. Interacting with the door when this is done gives
the following message:
Cojeme!

PACO
It’s nailed shut!

The player must then search through various boxes around the
room and find one of the following items: ’crowbar’, ’axe’,
’hammer’, ’spade’.
Searching the crates containing any of these items yields the
corresponding message:
IF THE PLAYER FOUND THE CROWBAR:
PACO
I bet I can use this to crack
that door open!

48
IF THE PLAYER FOUND THE AXE:
PACO
I bet I can use this to chop
right through that door!
IF THE PLAYER FOUND THE HAMMER:
PACO
I bet I can break the door right
down with this!
IF THE PLAYER FOUND THE SPADE:
PACO
I bet I can lever the door open
with this!
Interacting with the door once any one of these items has
been acquired allows Paco to break down the door (playing a
corresponding sound to reflect the tool used) and escape
through into the underground tunnel.
PACO
I need to get out of here before
that thing comes through after
me!
Thus follows the ’Tunnel Chase’ sequence:
Approximately ten seconds after Paco enters the first tunnel
room, the monster will follow him through the door. It will
have a rudimentary intelligence and will search for him
inside the tunnels. Paco must navigate the tunnels, avoiding
the monster when necessary. The tunnels - where not dimly
lit with portable lamps - are pitch black, and often the only
way of knowing the monster is near is the sound of whispering
and wailing that gets louder with proximity. Lamps will also
flicker out when the monster is nearby.
Eventually, Paco will come

PACO
*pant* *wheeze*
Fuck me!

I don’t want to think about
whatever that was... I am not a
superstitious man but...
There is a brief pause.
PACO
I hope the students are ok...
