What is Shakespeare
in Shoreditch?
Shakespeare in Shoreditch is a festival that reconnects
the vibrant 21st century Shoreditch to its rich cultural
history.
Shakespeare worked in Shoreditch in the 1600s
writing some of his most renowned plays, yet unlike
the iconic Stratford-upon-Avon or Shakespeare's
Globe; Shakespeare’s Shoreditch is far from the public
consciousness.

As a project Shakespeare in Shoreditch developed
from RIFT’s work on Hoxton Street in 2012.
The Festival was launched in April 2014 with the
commissioning of 10 new plays and the inaugural
Festival followed in October. In April 2015 Shakespeare
in Shoreditch became a registered charity.

Shoreditch
special?

At its heart, Shakespeare in Shoreditch is about
inspiring creativity through commissioning new writing,
producing high quality plays and delivering mad-cap
challenges such as the Annie’s 1000 Plays project, which
saw playwright Annie Jenkins write 1000 plays in 10
days thanks to contributions by members of the public.
Influenced by his universal plays the festival reimagines
what the Bard might be writing about if he lived in
Shoreditch today. From family feuds to London’s
housing crisis, Shakespeare in Shoreditch encourages a
dialogue about the changing face of East London.

As a charity we are dependant on public funding and
donations everything we raise goes directly into our
activities: commissioning new writing, producing plays
with britain’s most promising directors, programming
engaging talks and workshops, and
inspiring creativity.
With cuts to Arts funding taking place all across the
country, we are just one of many organisation who are
having to work a little bit harder to continue to
deliver exciting and ambitious projects.
Our overheads are small and we are very resourceful
but Shakespeare in Shoreditch will be so much
stronger with the support of individuals and
organisations involved in shaping the festival and our
activities beyond April 2016.

Who is involved?
Shakespeare in Shoreditch is a registered charity
(1161912). The festival is produced in collaboration
with RIFT supported by New Diorama Theatre, The
Mill Co Project, The Proud Archivist and The Creative
Exchange.

What is planned for
2016?
With your donations and support
Shakespeare in Shoreditch will return in April
with an essential programme of plays,
performances and creative activities
to celebrate the 400 year anniversary
of Shakespeare’s death.
We are transforming the Rose Lipman Building
in Haggerston into a cosy storm shelter;
a place to share stories, watch films, attend
workshops and hear from leading academics about
Shakespearean duels and brawls.
The festival hub will be home to the four plays
inspired by the Shakespearean theme of storms;
Grey Man by Lulu Raczka, This is Art by Charlene
James, The H-Word by David Watson and Pelican
Daughters by Amy Rosenthal.
In a world record attempt, a company
of Rude Mechanicals will tour Hackney
on a medieval pageant wagon performing
1000 plays in 10 days.
Steaming down Kingsland Road and up the River
Lea this crew of patches, vagabonds, will stop off at
Hackney’s beloved cultural institutions to herald the
start of the Festival.

Donate Money

We need to raise £20,000 in
donations to ensure that the
Festival, without cuts and
compromises, can take place in
April 2016. This is just a small
proportion of the budget for the
whole festival - each play costs
£5,000 to produce - but will be an
invaluable contribution to making
the festival a success.
