Make Halloween a fun, safe and happy time for kids.

To make the most of your Halloween, use the following safety
tips to ensure an enjoyable experience for you and your child.

Costume Safety. Choose costumes that are bright
and reflective. Make sure shoes fit well and costumes are
short enough to avoid tripping. Always carry a
flashlight with fresh batteries to light the way for
children and escorts.

Safety on the Trick or Treat Trail.

Young children should be accompanied by parents or
a responsible adult, while older children going alone
should have a route and a specific time when they
should return home. Encourage your children to abide
by regular rules of walking around, such as crossing
at intersections and designated crosswalks to avoid
accidents. Lastly, only visit homes that have a porch
light on, as not everyone celebrates Halloween.

Treat Distribution. Replace any outdoor burned-out bulbs and remove any obstacles
such as garden hoses, toys, bikes or lawn decorations that could cause a child to trip. Have your
treats ready by the door so you don't need to look for them when trick-or-treaters arrive. Keep
pets away from the front door so they do not jump or bite a trick-or-treater.

Healthy Halloween. Having a good meal prior to trick-or-treating will discourage
youngsters from eating along the trick-or-treat trail. All candy should be inspected. Throw
out any candy that appears to have been tampered with or that is not in its original wrapper.
Small, hard candy should be removed, as it can be a choking hazard to small children.
