Report Summer 2015
Patricia Brück visited Kenya in August/September 2015 but could not achieve much
at the school, as the teachers of public schools were on an extensive strike for better
payment (also those of the School for the Deaf in Kilifi). That's why the schools only
reopenend in October.

She brought some balls and hand puppets for the children. John Muzungu was
happy to receive and are used to play by the children now.

Our Deaf pharmacist, Sreco Dolanc, joined her to visit Kenya and brought toys and
sports gear that was contributed by the association "For A Better World" from
Slovenia. All these items were also given to John Muzungu.

The school has 169 students this year:
Despite of the difficult situation the school uses Sign
Language and English and their lessons are very
visual and hands on with simple means:

Since our last visit there have been some changes:
KITCHEN:
The stoves and the exhaust pipes have been reparied, the tiles renewed, the door
changed and the ceiling and the walls painted

RAIN GUTTER:
The roofs of the dormitories have been equipped with rain gutters that lead to the
water tank so that the rain water is collected to reduce the water bill.

FOOD SUPPLY:
In 2015 the school has started to pant food on the school grounds and they could
harvest maize, tomatoes, mchicha (a kind of spinach) and other vegetables.

Unfortunately, the culture of tomatoes did not really work as the temperature in the
green house was too hot when the plants were little. The gardeners have learned
their lesson and want to start later in the year (in April, not in January)
POULTRY KEEPING:
Unfortunately, the 200 hens died of an infection or had to be slaughtered. John
Muzungu has planed to have an open air enclosure to have the chicken go outside
during the day. To raise chicken and to sell their eggs will help to give better nutrition
to the children and to get some income for the school.

RABBIT KEEPING:
The rabbits have gotten an open cage where there is enough air through the grids.
Unfortunately they have to sit on the grid what may hurt their paws. They are going to
be given wooden boards to make it more comfortable to lie on.

What is planned?
1) Plaster and paint for the facade of the kitchen

2) 2 new doors to the store rooms and outside

3) A new bycicle for the Deaf cook Kasungu whose bycicle was completely
crashed in an accident (We are happy to say that he has survived and
recovered).

4) Repair of the stairs leading to the girls' dormitory because of the first step
being too high

5) Renovation of the toilets and showers

6) Renovation of the small house next to the kitchen to build a baking oven into it
(for baking bread)

7) Replacement of the play ground (ongoing)

The next visit to the school is scheduled in January 2016..
