Waterhoppers  Training  Manual

Intro
Contained  in  this  booklet  is  everything  you  need  to  know  to  start  working  at  Waterhoppers.    This  training
manual  is  broken  down  into  easy  steps  to  follow  in  order  to  become  competent  in  all  of  the  areas  required
on  the  boat,  and  so  be  at  a  satisfactory  level  in  order  to  be  signed  off  as  competent  in  each  of  the  specific
areas  by  the  boat  manager.    The  training  guide  means  you  are  taking  responsibility  for  furthering  your
diving  education  at  Waterhoppers  and  in  turn  your  career  within  the  dive  industry.

Katerina  Boat  Plan
Below  is  the  boat  plan  of  the  Katerina  this  is  a  rough  outline  and  obviously  not  in  detail  but  it  will  give  you
the  idea  of  the  general  lay  out,  what  happens  in  each  area  and  where  everything  is  stored  .

Start  of  the  day  tasks
You  will  arrive  each  day  before  the  start  of  work  (8.15)  not  eating  your  breakfast.    Come  onto  the  boat,  put
your  bags  away  down  stairs  ,  then  check  the  daily  work  sheet  to  find  out  what  job  role  you  are  doing  for
the  day.

The  first  task  each  day  is  to  carry  the  tanks  onto  the  boat,  the  10  litres  are  stored  the  left  side  and  the  12  &
15  litres  are  stored  on  the  right  (see  boat  plan).
At  the  start  of  the  day  some  of  the  10  litres  are  piled  up  outside  of  the  boat  ready  to  be  carried  on  and
made  into  novice  sets.
Tanks  should  never  be  thrown,  they  should  be  lain  down  in  piles  no  more  than  three  high  and  kept  in  place
with  weights.  If  a  tank  falls  over,  it  must  be  sent  to  the  office  and  checked  for  damage.

Once  you  have  moved  the  tanks  return  to  the  boat  and  proceed  to  your  allotted  tasks  of  either  kit
preparation  or  top  of  the  boat  meet  and  greet.

Equipment  storage

All  the  equipment  stored  on  the  boat  has  a  set  place  which  may  change  at  certain  points  during  the  season.

Regulators  are  stored  in  area  3
Snorkelling  programme  kit  3
Fins  6
Wetsuits  6
BCDS  area  7  (New  Cressi’s  3)
Masks  7
Snorkels    7
Weight  belts  8

Set  Up
Morning  tasks:
You  will  be  assigned  one  of  two  jobs  for  the  morning.
Either  equipment  set  up  (downstairs)  or  checking  medical  forms  (upstairs).

Qualified  &  student  kit

Equipment  set  up  8:15-‐9:30:
Equipment  is  set  up  according  to  what  the  instructors  and  qualified  dive  leaders  write  on  the  tickets.
Each  ticket  will  have  on  it:  the  diver’s  name  and  then  next  to  it  either  a  ‘Q’  or  ‘S’  this  is  to  signify  qualified
or  student  listed  underneath  will  be    BCD  size,  wet  suit  size,  regulator,  fin  size,  number  of  kilos  for  the
weight  belt.  These  are  to  be  put  into  a  neat  bundle  as  shown.
Below  is  a  step  by  step  guide  how  to  set  up  a  student  equipment  set,  the  last  section  shows  the  changes
needed  to  be  made  in  order  to  prepare  up  a  qualified  set  correctly.

Only  set  up  what  is  written  on  the  ticket  as  some  of  the  qualified  divers  and  students  will  bring  their  own
equipment.

Example  of  Morning  set  up  of  Qualified  /  Student  equipment

Examples  of  the  two  types  of
tickets  that  you  would  expect  to
receive  in  the  morning.    The
difference  being  The  Q  or  S
noted  in  the  top  right  corner

First  find  the  Correct  BCD  and
weight  belt  as  stated  on  the
ticket.
Lay  the  BCD  on  top  of  the  weight
belt

Placed  regulator  on  top  (if
requested)

Placed  fins  on  top  (if  requested)

Place  wetsuit  on  top
Careful  to  pick  the  correct
wetsuit  (  long  or  short)  this  will
change  throughout  the  season
depending  on  the  water
temperature

Close  the  BCD  attaching  the
shoulder  straps  diagonally  to  the
opposite  clasps,  This  is  to  keep
the  set  more  secure.
Make  sure  the  inflator  hose  isn’t
hanging  out  of  the  package.

8

Wrap  the  weight  belt  around  the
middle
Place  the  paper  ticket  into  the
buckle  with  the  name  easily
visible

The  set  up  is  basically  the  same
for  qualified  equipment  set
however  you  attach  a  12  litre
tank  to  the  BCD  and  regulator.

Top  of  boat  medical  form  checking  /  meet  and  greet

Medical  form  checking  8:15-‐9:30:
Your  job  is  to  assist  the  Sales  team  on  the  top  of  the  boat  until  the  boat  has  left  the  harbour.
One  of  you  will  sit  at  the  top  of  the  stairs  handing  out  pens  and  directing  the  customers  to  the  correct
seating  area.    This  role  is  very  important  as  you  are  one  of  the  first  members  of  staff  the  guests  has  come
into  contact,  so  you  may  well  be  the  first  impression  of  the  staff  that    they  have.    This  means  smiling  and
being  willing  to  help,  not  sitting  and  grunting,  remember  even  though  you  have  done  this  every  day  for  the
last  four  months  they  may  never  have  been  diving  before  and  may  be  very  nervous.  Refrain  from  chatting
in  groups  of  staff  as  you  become  instantly  unapproachable.
The  other  members  of  staff  on  the  top  of  the  boat  will  be  wandering  around  helping  the  guests  fill  in  their
medical  forms.    Once  they  have  filled  in  the  forms  you  have  to  check  them  to  see  if  there  are  any  yes’s.  If
there  are  yes’s  you  will  need  to  take  them  to  see  the  ship’s  doctor  in  order  to  have  their  medical  forms
signed  off  and  cleared  to  go  diving.  Once  the  doctor  has  cleared  them  for  diving  mark  you  initial  in  the  top
corner  of  the  medical  form,  this  shows  the  sales  team  that  they  have  been  checked  and  so  are  ready  to  be
put  into  their  diving  groups.
The  number  of  dives  they  have  prepaid  for  will  be  written  at  the  top  of  their  form.
