The course is called Design Critique. It is not about what one
might call Critical Design. Which means that it is not about
giving form to something that will work as a critique of
something out there in the bad bad world. This course is about
looking at the designer. In that way it turns the focus inward
and asks: What does it mean to work with visual productions
The subtitle of the course is: New Compendium
The course sets out to explore and discuss contemporary
visual outputs and the role of the designer in such productions.
The work will be informed by a rather speculative hypothesis
claiming that most of the traditional hi-status graphic design
outputs now must be seen as fetish-objects, as outdated
modes of production: The one-off poster exhibitions; the cute
telephone drawings, tattoo-like with diamonds and all/or in the
style of new new age; the fine art catalogues in the Motto
bookstore with pantone colors, typographic idiosyncrasies and
complicated binding. The predominant feeling that these
convey is one of nostalgia for a time when the means of
productions where different.
Starting out by looking at selected works/technologies/
practices/theories the class will work as a research unit by
making a compendium that can be used now and in the future.
Compendium is here understood as a collection of image
examples, references and texts of all sorts.
The working mode will be one of fascinated uncertainty. We will
try to optimistic.
