Easy Problem
by
Lukáš Horák & Andrew Thompson

INT. DAY AT A CAFé TABLE

A young man and a woman are sitting a table in a café, near
a window, so we can see what looks like a college campus
oustide, swarms of students walking by. The woman is called
Liz and is drinking coffee, watching Sam scribbling on a
piece of paper.

LIZ
You can't just let people walk all
over you like that.

SAM
(scribbling)
I'm not letting people walk over
me. It was just a strategic choice
on my part.

LIZ
You're not Hitler, Sammie, you
don't need to tactically retreat.
You could have published already.

SAM
(putting a pen down,
annoyed)
Nobody would read it, Liz, you
know just as well as I do that the
journals are just bunch of friends
approving each other's
publications.

Sam picks up the pen again

SAM (CONT'D)
It's a fucking joke

LIZ
Yeah, but now he gets to act like
it's his own work.

Sam ignores Liz for a while, then turning his scribblings
to her. It looks mostly like sharp wavy lines with numbers
and works like "theta" state written over them.

SAM
He can shove it up his ass, I'm
going at it from a completely new
direction now. You should too. I
told you that, epileptics, it's
just, you can't predict shit,
you're just watching a car crash
happen on those EEGs

2.

LIZ
I'm trying to help people
SAM
I know and that's awesome, but
running in circles does not help
your career or them. Listen,
it's..we gotta find rhytm, right?
You don't measure heartbeat by
listening to a broken ankle. You
find the loudest and most reliable
place to get the rhytm.
LIZ
(looking annoyed since
Sam's comments abou her
work)
Yeah, you're talking about sleep,
it's not like nobody tried that.
SAM
Not like this, not with, with a
proper feedback loop, not if we
feed the signal right back and
make it more rhytmical, more
focused.
LIZ
You would fry someone's brain, you
realize that?
SAM
I don't need a one person ethics
commitee, I want you to look at it
and tell me what you think.
Hypothetical, right, no need for
that knda...
LIZ
(cutting him off)
I think it's creepy.

Sam goes stone faced, folding up the paper and putting it
into his pocket, not looking at Liz.

LIZ (CONT'D)
Are you gonna scream at me again?

SAM
No.

LIZ
No because you don't want to or no
because we are in public?

3.

SAM
Don't do this, don't make me sound
like some fucking monster..
LIZ
You think I wanted to meet up, so
you can give me a lecture? I'm
done, Sam.
SAM
Done with what?
LIZ
Done with tolerating you going
crazy. I'm just...I don't need it
and you don't need it. I think you
do that to get my attention, which
is crazy by itself..
SAM
I said I'm sorry, many times.
LIZ
That's the problem.

Liz is trying not to cry, stands up and walks away. Sam is
watching her walk out of the Café, the normal sounds is
slowly replaced by a staticy sounding hum. As the doors
close, the scene fades to black, with wavy lines morphing
into the title.
