The NXT Starters Guide
by Dave “EvilDave” Pearce, Jan 2016
On the 1st January 2016, the version 1.7 update to NRS (NXT Reference Software) was released. This is a
simple guide to the installation process for this latest version of the NRS.
For more details on the software itself, and on the NXT crypto-currency that it supports, please visit:
To download the NRS software, there are several possibilities:
Just to keep things simple, go to the forum:
There are several install packages for the Nxt Reference Software, including Windows 64-bit and Mac
installers. For the purposes of this guide, I'll be showing how to install the most common version, (compatible
with both Windows and Linux systems) using Windows Vista (32-bit) and Firefox.
Click on the link as shown, for the *.zip compressed file:
You should see a pop-up download request window, click on “Save” in order to download and save the install
package to your computer.
Once downloaded, go to the location containing the install package on your computer by clicking on the
“Downloads” arrow, and then opening the folder in Windows Explorer:
The NRS install package is a compressed (zipped) file. It needs to be uncompressed in order to be used.
Right-click on the nxt-client-..zip file and choose “Extract Here”:
And....wait until the files have all been extracted.
Once extracted, you will see a new folder (nxt-client-...) containing one subfolder: nxt
This nxt folder is the full NRS package. You could run the NRS from its current location, but it is better to
cut/copy to a more obvious location on the C drive. Use right-click to cut/copy nxt....:
…...and then paste nxt to the C drive location as shown:
