DRAFT SPEAKING NOTES FOR H.E. TEKEDA ALEMU,
PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FEDERAL
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ETHIOPIA
ALMA STEERING COMMITTEE HOLIDAY COCKTAIL RECEPTION
18 December 2015
4pm-6pm
Excellencies, H.E. Former President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of the United Republic of
Tanzania, H.E. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Joy
Phumaphi, Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance, fellow
permanent representatives, ladies and gentleman.
As Chair of the ALMA Steering Committee, it is my honor to welcome you all to the 2015
annual ALMA holiday cocktail reception.
This is a great occasion as we celebrate the culmination of the MDGs and the progress
made in the fight against malaria. Africa has made great strides indeed. The entire Africa
region has made a 66% reduction in malaria deaths and a 42% reduction in malaria
incidence overall.
I am happy to report that Ethiopia has reached 100% coverage of vector control for both
nets and indoor residual spraying (IRS).
We have also achieved green on all malaria indicators on the ALMA Scorecard for
Accountability and Action.
In addition, Ethiopia is proud that it has achieved a 50-75% decrease in malaria incidence
between 2000-2015.
As we move forward into the Sustainable Development Goals era and the malaria
elimination agenda, we must work even harder to ensure that we sustain the gains
already made and push forward to achieve a malaria free Africa by 2030.
Thank you.
I now welcome Ms. Joy Phumaphi, Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria
Alliance and our MC for the evening.
