Nuclear
Preparedness
As presented by Civil Defense

Good afternoon class, today the government of the United States of America has been kind enough to
send over us to teach you about the importance of practising lock down procedures during this time of
crisis. Even in Canada the threat of communism is very real.
The threat of nuclear attack is just as real as earthquakes, tornadoes, and tsunamis. With tensions
rising between free countries and communist Russia and its satellites. The closest strips of allied land
and communist land are just hundreds of meters apart at the Diomede islands.
The storage of nuclear defense systems, our alliances, our military might, and our proximity to large
population centers, all make us likely targets in the event of a nuclear attack. It is of the utmost
importance that we learn to shield and protect ourselves from any potential danger. In cooperation
with the United States, we have learned the correct procedures for avoiding radiation, fallout, and
shelter building.
Lockdown procedures allow us to move students into the most secure rooms in the building, drywall
alone can reduce radiation exposure two fold. However, underground shelters such as basements can
reduce radiation exposure up to 100 times[5]. Soviet attack will likely have some warning ahead of
time, such as increased political tension, change in Defense Condition in the States, and much more.
Lockdown procedures can occur thanks to the help of NORAD, and the SAC. The combined efforts of
both our great nations allows us a minimum of 15 minutes to seek shelter and prepare for war.
In the event of a nuclear attack we lay safe knowing our government will stay secure, keeping our
military and populace informed in specially made Diefenbunkers[6]. Our government assists in the
evacuation efforts through the means of early warnings and Civil Defense. But none of this is of any
value without your willingness to survive, ultimately the decision to live or die is up to you. With the
arsenal of democracy at work and your cooperation we can stay safe, and stay free.
