TOTAL DARKNESS
A distant thunder in the compact black. Like devastating hurricane
winds erupting out of Pandora's Box. Over this -The VOICE of a man we will get to know as WARREN EINHORN.
EINHORN (V.O.)
Father, I have not sinned.
A pause of silence, as the thunder grows more and more powerful.
More and more menacing.
HARD OPENING CUT TO:
SOLAR FIRESTORMS OF IMMENSE VIOLENCE (OPTICAL - SUBLIMINAL)
Thermonuclear eruptions of apocalyptic fury explode from the
surface of the Sun, pure Hydrogen propelled thousand of miles into
the blackness of space.
HARD CUT TO:
A STONE GARGOYLE
Leathery wings, fangs bared, big bulging eyes, something so ugly
even evil spirits are scared away by it. We are -INT. GOTHIC CATHEDRAL - DAY
There are a lot of impenetrable shadows in this solemn, highceilinged, silent space.
Fine incense mist drifts past massive columns, wrapping around
stone gargoyles, floating in and out of the oblique shafts
sunlight cutting through elaborate stained glass.
EINHORN (O.S.)
I don't remember how long since my
last confession.
On the vast cathedral floor, we find images of saints, rows of
flickering candles, more shadows. A view on the edge of a dream.
Or a nightmare.
EINHORN (O.S.)
It doesn't matter...
INT. GOTHIC CATHEDRAL - CONFESSIONAL - DAY
Original Screenplay by Sergio D. Altieri - © by the Author

WARREN EINHORN -- early fifties, GQ-handsome, tailor-made threepiece suit -- sits by the small grate of a CONFESSIONAL.
EINHORN
... This is not a confession anyway.
Half of his face is wrapped in darkness as he leans even closer to
the grille.
EINHORN
It's an accusation against God.
A TOTAL ECLIPSE (TIME-LAPSE - OPTICAL - SUBLIMINAL)
At the surreal speed of time-lapse photography, the compact black
disc of the Moon engulfs the burning orb of the Sun.
INT. GOTHIC CATHEDRAL - CONFESSIONAL - DAY
EINHORN
You see, Father, God has not been by
my side.
EINHORN pauses, attempting to see beyond the grille. All he
perceives is -A slight shift in the shadowy presence the other side.
EINHORN
God failed me with what I thought
was His most complex creation.
TOTAL ECLIPSE - SOLAR CROWN (TIME-LAPSE - OPTICAL - SUBLIMINAL)
The solar crown becomes fully visible: a dance of twisting
tentacles of fire out of the "Black Sun".
INT. GOTHIC CATHEDRAL - CONFESSIONAL - DAY
EINHORN
The soul of man.
Warren Einhorn's expression is almost pained.
EINHORN
So weak, so fragile, so grotesquely
imperfect.

IN THE DARKNESS
The beat of a human HEART, accelerated, under heavy stress. And
yet powerful, unrelenting. The heartbeat and -FOOTFALLS, the rhythmic impacts of the feet of a runner.
HARD OPENING CUT TO:
EXT. "SKY FLATS" HIGH RIDGE PLATEAU - PRE-DAWN
A barren, harsh incline of basalt, eroded by the elements, cracked
by underground geological forces.
Majestic mountains tower as far as eye can see, surrounding the
plateau like the walls of an immense fortress.
A lone RUNNER, dwarfed by the vastness of the landscape, cuts
across the plateau of rock, heading toward jagged geological
formations at the highest edge.
THE LONE RUNNER (TRACKING)
A WOMAN, mid-thirties, the physical structure of a decathlete,
fierce determination on her strong, aristocratic features.
Her eyes, metal-gray, alert, scan the terrain ahead of her.
There's a curved scar under her left eye, not disfiguring but very
evident.
This is DENDRA YAEGEN.
She keeps running uphill. Sweat darkens her tank top and the
bandana tied around her forehead. Her hands hold the straps of the
compact knapsack on her back.
A SPECTACULAR MOUNTAIN SUNRISE (TIME-LAPSE)
At the surreal time-lapse speed, the first slice of the Sun
emerges behind dark peaks.
EXT. "SKY FLATS" PLATEAU - SUNRISE (TIME-LAPSE)
Pure light spreads across the basalt, casting long shadows,
engulfing -YAEGEN, her eyes narrowing in the glare of dawn, as she keeps
running uphill. Ahead of her:

A CRACK, some fifteen feet wide, cuts deep into the basalt like
wound left in the stone by an angry god.
She doesn't even slow down. Approaches the edge of the crack
she... Jumps!
EXT. DEEP INTO THE ABYSS - DAY
We are dozens of feet below the level of the plateau, looking up,
at the edges of the crack. Nothing but raw rock, deep shadows and
the murmur of the mountain wind.
YAEGEN (SLO-MO) can be seen flying across the width of the chasm.
EXT. SKY FLATS PLATEAU - DAY
YAEGEN lands on the opposite side of the crack, progressively
slowing down to a walk. She made it, she reached the highest
level. She comes to a quiet halt in front of:
EXT. "RATAI" CAVERN - DAY
A jagged arched entrance, black and foreboding, is in the middle
of a harsh wall of rock.
YAEGEN places the knapsack to the ground and opens it. She pulls
out a MASSIVE BLOCK OF RAW SALT, some twenty pounds heavy.
She places the block of salt right on the threshold of the cavern.
YAEGEN turns around and walks across the slab of basalt all the
way to the very edge of the plateau, a landscape becoming
progressively visible beyond.
She finally stops, inhaling the wind, staring out to infinity.
AERIAL PULL BACK BEGINS
we move away from Yaegen, her lone figure on the very edge of a
mind-bending CHASM.
AERIAL VIEW GOES HIGHER AND HIGHER
Yaegen's shape progressively blends into the basalt of the
plateau, as the rest of the landscape invades the entire frame.
LARTEYN CRATER

Huge, gigantic, probably six miles across, surrounded by
inaccessible, spectacular peaks. More inaccessible mountain ranges
tower on the distant horizon.
An ancient volcano that stopped spitting fire and molten rocks
millions of years in the past. And now, inside the crater:
There's a LAKE: the mountain wind pushing small waves across
indigo blue waters, unfathomable in their depths.
Welcome to LARTEYN CRATER NATIONAL PARK, the last place for men
and gods.
CUT TO:
HIGH PLAINS - HIGHWAY - DAY
A vast flatland, some five thousand feet above sea level, low
dark-green trees peppering the yellowish grass.
A lone HIGHWAY cuts across the landscape, leading towards a
majestic mountain range to the North. The wind is the only sound.
Without warning:
Whoosh! A silver PORSCHE CARRERA roars past, the powerful aircooled engine hissing at full thrust.
PORSCHE CARRERA - DAY (HIGH-SPEED AERIAL)
WE FOLLOW the sportscar as it devours the road at one hundredtwenty miles per hour. Instants later:
A LARGE SHADOW casts a fast-moving darkness onto the plain,
gliding parallel to the highway.
A SIKORSKY UH-60 BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER (HIGH-SPEED AERIAL)
A heavy, menacing bird of prey -- navigation systems and a 20mm
CHAIN-GUN sprouting from the fuselage like hi-tech weeds, twin
General Electric turboshafts howling -- slides into view.
BLACK HAWK - DAY (AIR-TO-AIR)
The door of the CARGO HOLD slides open. An instant later:
GUNNER #1 & #2 -- black combat fatigues, faces hidden by a flight
helmets, sunvisors lowered -- recklessly lean forward, zeroing on
the Porsche.

GUNNER #1 racks a six-barrel Gatling MINIGUN -- 7.62mm caliber,
two thousand rounds-per-minute -- on door pintle mount.
INT. PORSCHE - DAY (HIGH-SPEED MOVING)
EDWARD SANDERS -- the DRIVER, crewcut, early thirties, strong
features -- instantly sees the danger.
INT. BLACK HAWK - CARGO HOLD - DAY (IN FLIGHT)
GUNNER #1 cuts loose, bright flames flare out of the bores of the
minigun, a stream of brass ticking away.
HIGHWAY - DAY (HIGH-SPEED MOVING)
The PORSCHE accelerates and starts swerving, trying to minimize
itself as a target.
7.62mm bullets rain down the path of the speeding car like a
deadly metal hail, fragments of asphalt flying, the ground
erupting.
Slugs go clean through the rear window, webbing it with cracks.
Yet, even under that heavy fire:
The PORSCHE keeps going full speed.
HIGHWAY & BLACK HAWK - DAY (AERIAL)
A distant view of the chase, the BLACK HAWK as a dragonfly of
steel after a reckless spider.
The minigun fires incessantly, unleashing hundreds of bullets at
the moving target.
INT. BLACK HAWK - FLIGHT DECK - DAY (IN FLIGHT)
The PILOT -- decked as the GUNNER #1 and just as unrecognizable -stiffens, reacting at a sudden oncoming danger.
HIS GLOVED HANDS man the joysticks.
BLACK HAWK - DAY (AIR-TO-AIR)
The dragonfly of steel pulls up, turbines roaring full boost,
recklessly clearing an interstate power line.
The PORSCHE streaks underneath the wires, barreling toward the
mountain range.

CUT TO:
MANY ELABORATE WINDCHIMES
Each different, each with its own individuality. They are made out
of wood, metal, obsidian, glass, clearly the work of a careful
artist.
They hang from a long beam, against the cobalt blue sky, swaying
and clinking in the wind, a haunting chant of spirits. We are:
EXT. DEVIL'S PEAK WEATHER STATION - OBSERVATION DECK - DAY
A mind-bending view of the ancient volcano and its lake stretches
beyond the parapet.
The Weather Station is a structural blend of log, stone and
concrete, built atop of one of the highest peaks of the crater
rim.
A metal scaffolding supports radio-dish, anemometer, hygrometer,
red-and-white windsock, a small American flag.
A METAL SIGN posted on the narrow walkway leading up there reads:
LARTEYN CRATER NATIONAL PARK
DEVIL'S PEAK WEATHER STATION
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
A seemingly eternal peace reigns up here, the only sounds are the
wind and the clinking of the chimes. Suddenly:
DENDRA YAEGEN (SLO-MO), still in full run, emerges out of a rock
formation, performs a spectacular somersault above the parapet and
lands on her feet on the deck.
YAEGEN stops, catching her breath for a moment, looking at the
majestic landscape all around her.
A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE WEATHER STATION (HANDHELD)
SOMEONE is on higher ground, somewhere in the deep woods
surrounding the station. Through this stranger's POV we see:
YAEGEN getting the empty knapsack off her shoulders and entering
the station. For long moment, there's nothing but the wind -THE POV (HANDHELD), somewhat ominously, starts moving toward the
structure.
