Verpakt Management Services
RiverNile Casino was one of the smaller casino brands in the Vegas Partner Lounge group, and in November
2013 I was tasked with writing fresh copy for the entire site. It was used until RiverNile was merged with a
larger casino in early 2015.
The copy for the homepage of RiverNile Casino was briefed as a welcome message and introduction for new
players, conforming to the casino brand's identity as an adventurous gaming destination. The copy is therefore
infused with the imagery of exploration and discovering hidden treasures in the spirit of Indiana Jones. It
remains informative, however, and compliant with SEO requirements.
For the 'getting started' page it was necessary to be as clear and concise as possible, explaining how to
download the software, install it, register and get started. It was of extreme importance that potential new
players not get confused during this process as that could be enough to drive them elsewhere.
Each year Verpakt Management Services/Vegas Partner Lounge would donate a substantial amount of money to a
local charity. In 2013 I was tasked with identifying a local charity, attending the cheque handover and writing the
copy for the company's charity webpage.
The tone of 777 Dragon Casino was markedly different from RiverNile Casino. The brand's identity is also exotic,
but specifically oriental. The copy therefore had to evoke the traditional imagery of the orient while staying clear of
any offensive stereotypes.
I was tasked with producing fresh copy for the entire 777 Dragon Casino site shortly after completing RiverNile
Casino. It was used until early 2015 when the site was decommissioned.
The Sandton Chronicle
The Sandton Chronicle is a free community newspaper featuring news and general interest pieces relevant to the
broader Sandton community. My stories were regularly featured on the front page, especially toward the end of my
tenure. Journalists were solely responsible for sourcing and investigating news stories, as well as sourcing or
physically taking the accompanying photographs.
The front page feature 'Sandton Grows Up' received praise from a number of readers. It looked at the transformation
Sandton has undergone and ahead at how it will continue to change, illustrating the bigger picture. Many residents
had complained about increased densification but the article frames this in the context of a healthy, growing city.
For 'Roots of Freedom' I had the honour of a
brief interaction with then deputy president
Kgalema Motlanthe for the corresponding
photograph as he held the original copy of the
Freedom Charter that was donated to the
Liliesleaf Trust in Rivonia.
As a features writer with
The Citizen it was my
mandate to create
articles related to the
or general lifestyle
pieces that were
informative as well as
For 'Nelson Mandela's
Game' I was able to
interview, in person, the
author of the book which
became the film
Invictus, starring Matt
Damon. John Carlin had
been a journalist during
this special chapter in
'Written in Stone' was a challenging piece to write having not come from a fine arts
background. I was tasked with writing a critique of a new exhibition and I had to wing it as best
I could, but the article was warmly received.
