Review of “An Inconvenient Truth”
(Movie poster for “An Inconvenient Truth”)
“An Inconvenient Truth” directed Davis Guggenheim exceeds expectations by being an
insightful and engaging documentary on global warming. The film is a combination of Al Gore’s
global presentations on climate crisis with asides that delve into Gore’s past that led him to
taking charge and action in this global issue. There is an apprehension that Gore’s political
agenda may distract or influence the documentary which is not unwarranted, but overall the film
stays on topic by providing an easy to understand demonstration of the dangers of global
warming. “An Inconvenient Truth” successfully argues that global warming is an issue that
needs to be addressed before it is too late.
The film opens with a natural scene of a flowing river and Gore narrating,
“
You listen to a river gently rolling by.
You notice the leaves rustling in the wind.
You hear the birds, you hear a tree fall.
In the distance you hear a cow.
You ...
It's quiet, peaceful.
And all of a sudden, it's a gear shift inside you.
And it's like taking a deep breath.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that”
which sets the tone for the rest of the movie: a calm narration of information pertaining to global
warming and then the realization of what is being portrayed elicits a moment of shocking truth.
The majority of the film is a presentation from Al Gore which he had been doing prior to running
for president and then he returned to doing these presentations after his campaign failed. Gore
claims that humans are causing global warming and if we don’t take action to combat it, we will
reach a point that we will be unable to return from and lose any hope of restoration.
There is a plethora of imagery and charts throughout the presentation to help explain,
demonstrate, and provide evidence of the issues that global warming presents. There was one
image in particular that had a sidebyside comparison of an Argentine glacier with a 20 years
time difference.
(Image from film comparing an Argentine glacier 20 years prior to the present [of the film in 2006.])
This image warrants and drives the message home in a very clear format; global warming is real
and changes can be seen within two decades time. The film was able to present its message
throughout the duration which draws the question, how accurate were the scientific arguments
that were used?
