Piotrkowska
Street is not crossed by any other – every street branching off
from Piotrkowska have
its start here.

Piotrkowska Street is
not an ordinary one - it is the
longest shopping street in
Europe as well as remarkable
pedestrian precinct in Łódź.
Moreover, it is 4 kilometres
200 metres of history, splendid townhouses, lovely cafés and
restaurants and plenty of places with pleasant atmosphere (we
will elaborate on them another time). The elderly in Łódź call the street Miss
Piotrkowska. Liberty Square - once called New Market - forms her head (admittedly, it’s not round but hexagonal). The street itself is Miss’s body, being a kind
of a city’s spine, and her arms are streets branching off squarely. On Piotrkowska
Street we can find many interesting shops, restaurants and well-known, international brands, boutiques and cafes. Walking around you can’t miss ubiquitous
rickshaws. Here you can stumble across prominent Polish people at every turn
- either on their star in Łódź’s Walk of Fame or on one of the statues of Great
People of Łódź. When the walk starts to exhaust you, you can sit on a bench with
Julian Tuwim or join the most affluent manufacturers at their table. However, this
glorious pedestrian zone hides another treasure, invisible with the naked eye - it’s
the spirit of past years living in old historic townhouses that makes it so special.

Rays of sunshine percolate
through the colourful stained glass,
which is the roof ’s fancy structure. White stanchions supporting it
and white benches waiting for tired
travellers makes the whole design
even more fabulous. Our journey
begins in the passenger transfer
centre in Łódź called by citizens
„Przesiadkowo” or „The Unicorns
Stable”. The passenger trasfer centre was opened on 30th October
2015 and since then – no matter if
it’s sunny or dreary – it has always
pleased the eyes of Łódź’s inhabitants by its looks. Even after dawn
„The Unicorns Stable” does not
stop bestowing us with its colours
thanks to 74 lamps, which provide excellent lighting for travellers.
Splendid structure is 100 metres
long and serves 10 tram lines. Maybe
Łódź is not as gray as it is painted?

The Rose Passsage

Rays of sunshine are reflecting in thousands of glass
shards, composed into floral design. That’s the view you will
see on townhouse covered in glass mozaic at 3 Piotrkowska
Street. Unexpectedly, it’s not front, but the back that was
changed into this unusual work of art. So if you want to admire it, you have to step off our well-known pedestrian precinct and dip into the yard. On a plate by the entrance we can
read that “The Rose Passage”, created by Joanna Rajkowska,
was made in the years 2013-2014 as a part of Łódź’s Diamonds
Project, made in collaboration with Łódź 4 Cultures Festival.

Łódź’s typical…

Sherlock, i.e. violin hanging on
the wall or mannequin dressed
like this famous investigator.

Łódź Kaliska

Łódź Kaliska is a train station known thanks to many movies, i.e.
„Ajlawju”, where in one of the scenes Cezary Pazura leaves the building and says his famous words. Not everyone knows that it is also a
club created by an artistic group known under the same name. Apart
from being a popular pub, Łódź Kaliska serves as a headquarters of the
Artistic Association and as an art gallery. But wait, there’s more! Various
concerts, exhibitions, film festivals, theatre shows and performances
take place there as well. The interior of the venue on 102 Piotrkowska
Street is full of avant-garde works of its creators. Also, the red lighting
gives the place a unique vibe. Maybe that’s why so many artists come
here? Of course, only people who are 18 or above are allowed to enter.

Łódź’s typical…
żulik - brown rolls with
raisins
