Press Release
April 1st, 2016
Ortovox premieres 5 antenna avalanche beacon
Munich based mountain safety equipment manufacturer Ortovox SportArtikel GmbH will launch a
revolutionary 5 antenna avalanche beacon in Fall, 2016. Leapfrogging current technology the beacon’s
4 core ARM GoldFish processor is capable of both quantum and temporal signal analysis completely
eliminating spikes and interference from other electronics. The new beacon will be called the Ortovox
5th.Element.

The beacon uses industry standard Bluetooth LE to link with VR headsets such as the Occulus Rift.
This gives rescuers a 3D view of the search area with the locations of victims clearly displayed. A
rescuer simply has to walk to the nearest victim, probe and move on. It is expected that this feature will
appeal to piste patrollers and members of the rescue services. Bluetooth LE will also enable point-topoint communication with any in range beacon. A rescuer will potentially be able to tap into data from
victim’s HRM strap giving heart rate, body temperature etc. A true ‘vital signs” capability.

In conjunction with the 5th.Element beacon Ortovox will launch a new clothing range with integrated
beacon harness. All 2016/17 Ortovox jackets and fleeces will feature this technology and it is being
licensed to other manufacturers. The harness will link into two large flexible antenna sewn into the
lining. This significantly boosts transmit range even for non-Ortovox equipped searchers. The 5th.
Element uses Ortovox patented technology to transmit on the antenna that most closely approaches
the horizontal plane giving clearer, stronger signals to searchers. The use of 5 antennas significantly
increases the potential of this feature.
