How to Choose Road Rollers
1. Choose the road rollers according to the project quality
If you want the packing density even, tire roller will be the first choice. Tyred
roller do no harm to the soil original viscosity during rolling. There is good binding
properties between the soil layers, combined with the front wheels which can swing,
thus the uniform compaction is pefect.
To make smooth road compaction, full-driven roller is also available.
In order to achieve compaction effect as soon as possible, you can choose large
tonnage rollers to shorten the construction period.
2. Choose the road rollers according to the thickness
When compacting asphalt concrete pavement, the paving thickness will be a key
factor should be taken into consideration. Typically, when the ply thickness is less
than 60mm, it is better to use the small vibrating rollers with the amplitude ranging
from 0.35 to 0.60mm. This will avoid stacking, wave damage and aggregate
phenomena. Meanwhile, for those thickness more than 100mm, rollers with the
amplitude over 1.0mm will be better.
3. Choose the road rollers according to the thickness
For one, second class national trunk roads and vehicle-specific way, you should
use a large vibrating roller compacted with a high capacity of 6 ~ 10t; for third class
below road, it is best to use 2t flexible vibrating roller.
For cement concrete pavement, it can adopt tandem vibratory rollers while for
aphalt concrete pavement, for asphalt concrete pavement should use full-drive
vibratory roller. For advanced underlying pavement subgrade, the best is to use both
tires or tire roller drive vibratory roller.
4. Choose the road rollers according to the material
For rock fill and compaction, it should use large tonnage rollers so as to move
large blocks. For clay compaction, you’d better to use bump tamping roller. For
material mixture compaction, you’d better use vibrating rollers.
