A strong na=onal iden=ty is desirable insofar as
it can create unity among ci=zens, direct their
individual pursuits to the common good, and
encourage responsible values like poli=cal
par=cipa=on. When carried to an extreme,
however, it cons=tutes hyper-‐na=onalism and
promotes authoritarianism, intolerance, and
warmongering.

Patrio=sm refers to the posi=ve aUributes of
na=onal iden=ty while na=onalism refers to
the nega=ve. The first does not have to lead to
the second, which is linked to insecure ingroup
iden=fica=on and intergroup differen=a=on,
exacerbated by a superiority complex toward
the rest of the world. Patrio=sm, unlike
na=onalism, is consistent with interna=onalist
values; it is also more likely to be associated
with tolerance and diversity. As the author
points out, the phenomena are two sides of
the same coin.
