Di#mer,  J.  2005.  Captain  America’s  empire:
reflec9ons  on  iden9ty,  popular  culture,  and
post-‐9/11  geopoli9cs.  Annals  of  the  Associa.on

Public  intellectuals  like  Samuel  P.  Hun9ngton,
author  of  The  Clash  of  Civiliza.ons,  have
shaped  debate  over  the  significance  of  9/11.
Public-‐opinion  shapers  like  the  crea9ve  team
of  Captain  America  play  a  similar  role,  though
more  indirectly.  Their  forms  of  patrio9sm  are
complementary  and  oSen  simplified  by  and  for
the  proverbial  masses.  Neither  Hun9ngton  nor
Captain  American  are  simply  xenophobic;  in
fact,  the  superhero’s  current  incarna9on  is
liberal  in  many  ways.

The  Captain  is  as  a  barometer  of  US  self-‐
percep9ons  and  aYtudes  toward  the  “others,”
especially  of  “the  rest”  (non-‐West).  He  is  a
be#er  embodiment  of  US  na9onalism  than
Superman  since  he  is  a  na9ve-‐born  “American”
mo9vated  by  patrio9sm.  His  shield  symbolizes
of  the  defensive  nature  of  his  calling.  He  seeks
to  protect  an  “America”  that  is  the  vic9m  of
others’  aggression  rather  than  a  vic9mizer,  as
much  of  the  world  perceives  it.

The  term  “culture  wars”  was  coined  by
conserva9ve  pundit  Pat  Buchanan  many,  many
years  ago.  He  and  many  Republicans  are
distraught  by  the  risk  of  internal  or  external
subversion.  They  can  be  described  as  right-‐
wing  ideologues  whose  views  go  much  further
than  those  of  Captain  America.  He  is  a  truly
“American”  superhero:  a  rugged  individualist
pursuing  the  na9onal  interest  even  at  odds
with  government  when  necessary,  sensi9ve  to
but  unconvinced  by  the  “blame-‐America”
crowd.
