GOOD SHEPHERD GHANA METHODIST CHURCH - WORCESTER

GOOD SHEPHERD GHANA METHODIST CHURCH INAUGURATED
Story by Evangelist Thomas Ofori
If the Lord does not build the house the laborers labor in vain. [Psalm 127:1]

Good Shepherd Ghana Methodist Church, Worcester, Massachssets, was started on April 4th 2008
when mighty men and women with a vision of winning souls for God met as a prayer group under the
name John Wesley Strategic Prayer Center at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Worcester. We choose
Lutheran Church because the dominance of the United Methodist alliance in Worcester was a big fear
factor, which we considered to be our greatest threat. There were lots of time where we had wanted
to have our own Ghanaian services in our local language but our pastors did not like the idea for fear
that it may one day end up as an independent Ghanaian Methodist congregation.
On April 4th which was our first Prayer meeting outside Wesley United Methodist, there were tears of
joy on the faces of members for it was our first independent prayer session and we were about 34
members and the Pastor gave us the keys to continue our prayer meetings every Friday evening. We
were also given the permission to have our first Ghanaian Sunday service 2 months later.
On May 30th something happened at the prayer meeting which turned our joy into sorrow. The Pastor
at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church who has been our redeemer informed the prayer meeting that she
has been warned by the senior pastor of Wesley United Methodist to stop the prayer meeting with
immediate effect because we are part of UMC and have no right to leave that Church to worship in our
own way. That is how the enemy works. Satan will never let you have what you deserve but only
what you fight for. Paul said in the book of 2nd Corinthians “We are troubled on every side yet not
distressed, cast down but not destroyed”.
The sheep were thus scattered for almost 3 weeks with no church nor prayer meeting but God was so
merciful to us in that we secured a place at 78 Webster Street. This was due to the benevolence of The
Apostolic Church of Ghana. They gave us their sanctuary to conduct our prayer meetings on Thursdays
and also encouraged us to start evening church services at the same place. Three months later they
moved to their new church building and handed over 78 Webster Street to us as our permanent base.
Persecution was so heavy from the UMC. People were sent to write down names of members who
attend prayer meeting and church service yet God was our immediate help in the midst of these
circumstances.
Finally, Good Shepherd Ghana Methodist Church was launched as a Preaching Post on October 12th
2008 by Rev. Dr. J A. K Bonful with the able assistance of Opanin Fosu, Lay Chairman Methodist Church
North America.
GOOD SHEPERD GHANA METHODIST CHURCH has come to stay by God’s grace. We thank sincerely

REPORT OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD GHANA METHODIST CHURCH TO
THE ANNUAL MEETING 2009
History: The original membership was Ghanaian Methodist who joined the Wesley United Methodist
Church in Worcester on arrival to the United States. The reluctance/refusal of the clergy to allow the
rather large Ghanaian group to periodically worship like Ghanaian Methodists gave rise to increasing
dissatisfaction, which culminated in the desire to move away from the United Methodist enclose to
follow the example of other full Ghanaian Churches in the Worcester area.
Under the leadership of Evangelist and Choirmaster Thomas Ofori, a small group of about twenty
individuals moved out of Wesley as a prayer group. We sought permission from the pastor of the
Lutheran Church of Worcester to use part of their building for prayer meetings. We went there in April
2008. At the end of May, the host church (Lutheran) leadership requested us to leave their building
because the clergy of Wesley United Methodist Church have protested against our presence; claiming
us to be “their people”. We left quietly. By the Grace of God we very quickly found new accommodation
with the Apostolic Church; they were just about leaving their rental premises for a permanent church

building. It was arranged that until they left for their new church building, they would worship in the
morning whilst we used the place in the evenings. This arrangement went on till they left in September.
By that time, our membership had reached about 30. The prayer group was rechristened the GOOD
SHEPHERD GHANA METHODIST CHURCH.
LAUNCHING: The new church was land on 12th October 2008. The launching ceremony was officiated
by the Rev. Dr. John Bonful. By the Grace of God, the church now has a membership of fifty-five adults
and about 15 children. There are also a few distant members and also those who come in occasionally.
CONCLUSION: We are still working to win more souls for the Lord since there are many Ghanaian
Methodist around who do not attend church at all. We are also aiming at eventually obtaining a more
permanent church building and strengthening our young Men’s Fellowship, the Women’s Fellowship and
the Youth Fellowships; as well as the Sunday School. These are in their early stages and we pray the
Lord to strengthen us for the challenging tasks ahead.
