Why choose York?
I chose to get a sense of place for York because I will be spending the majority of my life here. I have a 10 year old daughter, Katerina Sophia
Pomper, who keeps me nailed to the region.
I don’t mind being attached to York. It is a pleasnt enough place. The climate is mild, the flora is abundant and verdant, and the soil is blessed.
My maternal grandfather, Harry Arnold, said that he didn’t need to vacation much because he already lived in the most beautiful place on Earth.
As I age, and learn of some of the more inhospitable environments in which humans exist, I appreciate his sentiment more and more.
As climate change and global economic caprice threaten to send my homeland into a strange new normal, it is good to take stock, and see what
resources, human and natural we have here.
I have recently acquired a position as a Greenhouse Foreman at a native plant wholesale nursery. In this upcoming chapter of my life, I will be
learning all of the waterways of the local region, and where best to get my bearings in this bigger, more complex world than my hometown?

The view at Lock 12 Holtwood, a former canal lock which is now a park. The Norman Wood Bridge, spanning into Lancaster, looms over the rocks across which one can hop when the water is low. This is my favorite part of York County.

Pictured here is the western edge of my family farm. Note the dilapidated barn and light industry in the background. My farm is at the
exact edge of suburbia, a symbol of York’s gradual change from farm
community into developed housing and industry.
