Course Description
This eleventh grade language arts course continues to emphasize the reading and writing
process. Students read extensively from a variety of sources and draft, revise, and edit their
own writing. The course focuses on intensive practices and study of information literary
reading and writing. In addition, students prepare, plan, deliver, and evaluate formal
presentation. Course required for graduation.
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Use supporting details and evidence to identify main ideas in literary and informational
texts.
• Write effectively for a variety of occasions, and use planning and revising to strengthen
writing.
• Collaborate with students to improve understanding of ideas and create presentations.
• Understand how the structure and connotation of language effects what is
communicated in both speech and writing.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Discussion, collaboration, reading, and writing are all central to learning in this class. As a
teacher, my goal is to act as a guide through each of these activities by asking questions,
pushing students to refine ideas, asking for closer reading, and providing feedback on all
writing. Students will be expected to annotate reading assignments, contribute to class
discussions, write essays and reading responses, and participate in peer review.
Course Policies
Attendance & Punctuality: Students are expected to be present and on time every day. You
will receive a citation for coming to class late.
Participation: Participation is a crucial part of succeeding in this class. If you do not come to
class on time and participate in activities, your grade will suffer.

Food & Drink: Students are allowed to have food and drink, but are expected to clean up
after themselves. If the classroom is not kept clean, this privilege will be revoked.
Electronic Devices in Class: Electronics are not allowed in class. Students will receive one
warning. After that, the device will be kept until the end of the school day. Repeat offenses
will result in the device being taken away and held at the office until the end of the
semester.
Late Work: All late work will be be penalized 50% unless prior arrangements have been
made with the teacher.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism will not be tolerated, and will result in an automatic failure on the
assignment.
