AIS 160, 4/15/2016 worksheet

Film & Literature Worksheet
Group Participants: _________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
Directions: Using class notes, the readings that are on D2L, and each other (the members of
your group), please complete this worksheet. It is meant to help you take away some of the main
points from the film lecture on Monday (Michelle Boyer-Kelly) and the literature lecture on
Wednesday (Xiochen Sun). This worksheet will serve as your (a) attendance and (b)
participation for the day—please make sure every member working in your group puts their
name on this sheet!
I will make copies of these sheets (one for each member) and will pass them back to you next
Friday, so that you can keep them with you for the future Final Exam review.
1. According to the lecture presented on Monday regarding film, please list the main film
eras that were discussed. After naming each era, please write a brief (1 sentence)
summary of what happened in this film era in regards to American Indians.

2. According to the article “Going Native” by Robert Baird (assigned D2L reading for
Monday’s lecture) the change of Lieutenant Dunbar’s (Kevin Costner) name to “Dances
with Wolves” is significant. In a few sentences, discuss how this name change is
important. Refer to both the reading, and to the scene that we saw in class on Monday.

3. Based on the reading from Arnold Krupat (required D2L reading for Wednesday’s
lecture) what is the definition of literary nationalism?

4. Based on Krupat, what is the definition of literary Indigenism?

5. Based on Krupat, what is the definition of literary cosmopolitanism?

6. According to Monday’s lecture, what are some reasons that Michelle Boyer-Kelly
suggests understanding the different American Indian film eras is important for
audiences?

7. Name at least three of the films that were discussed on Monday’s lecture. As a group,
select the film (from your list of three) that you think is the most important in terms of
supporting American Indian sovereignty—explain your answer in a few sentences.

8. As found in Krupat’s article, what is the definition of “native stories of survivance”?
Even though this is a complex definition, what do you think Krupat and Vizenor are
trying to say with this statement/definition?

9. As found in Krupat’s article, what is literary separatism?

10. As you may/may not know, Dances with Wolves was originally a novel (Michael Blake,
1988). Based on the few clips we saw on Monday, which literary group do you think this
book would belong in [separatism, nationalism, Indigenism, or cosmopolitanism]? Write
a few sentences to support your answer.

11. Thinking about the few film clips we saw from Dances with Wolves, what does this
movie say about non-Indian versus Indian land and environmental management?

12. In your group, please come up with one multiple choice exam question about the film
lecture from Monday. Keep in mind, this question may very well end up on the final
exam (so try not to make it too easy or too hard).

13. In your group, please come up with one multiple choice exam question about the
literature lecture from Wednesday. Keep in mind, this question may very well end up on
the final exam (so try not to make it too easy or too hard).
