Entering into the Realm of NonExistence
T. E. Ehrenfreund
I. Introduction
There is being and there is nonbeing. There is something and there is nothing. There is action and
there is stillness. Symbolically, there is light and there is darkness. Analogically, there is sun and there is
moon. We are within the Realm of Existence, of simply
being
. Herein, we live perceptively according to
what we can deduce and derive from this Realm. Our entire lives in all aspects of any kind or degree are
bound by this reality we know as being. Therefore, to imagine or ponder a reality opposite to ours (that of
nonexistence, nothingness, or “unreality”), is a truly difficult task. Outside of the faculty of our mind’s
intellect, pensivity, imagination, thought processes, or any other capabilities it may have (or yet have to
unlock or utilize), we cannot truly comprehend such a concept we have not ourselves experienced or even
have the ability to experience. Likewise, the concept of eternity or “timeless time” can be grasped to an
extent theoretically and philosophically; but in actuality, to grasp it in fullness is not possible due to a lack
of experiencing truly this reality of everlasting time. Nonexistence can be symbolically or illustratively
called “the absolute blackness” or “the total void”.
Nonexistence, along with many other phenomena, is a mystery. Contrary to popular and
mundane opinion, a mystery is not the absence of the knowledge of something, but (at least for the sake of
this paper) it is defined as that which can be understood to a certain degree via reason, logic, and the like,
but cannot be truly grasped in its entirety due to the aforementioned limitations that exist with us residing
in our present, finite, limiting reality of being. Using illustrative terms such as “the absolute blackness” or
“the total void” are useful in so far as they appeal to our experiential aspect of our thinking: we have
perceived darkness with the cessation of light, and therefore understand from experience the concept
of darkness or blackness. From this, we can infer that the adjective “absolute” modifying the noun
“darkness” signifies this darkness in an exponentially greater degree. The same applies to the term “the
total void”. However, almost all illustrations of mysteries or concepts outside of our finite perception
bound to this Realm of Existence, have their limitations; these terms of “the absolute darkness” and “the
total void” are of no exception. For, the concept of nonexistence is not one of physical attributes; hence,
it cannot be truly called “the absolute
blackness
”. Neither is the concept of nonexistence relating to
anything spatial. For nonexistence is the absence of all that we perceive, experience, or have yet to
experience within our current Realm of Existence or State of Being. Indeed, any analogy, or illustration
that tries to add ease or leverage to our minds to try to grasp this concept of nonexistence, will inevitably
lead us astray in understanding or even to start to understand just a fraction of what nonexistence truly is.
For it is totally and utterly outside of the current reality we find ourselves trapped within, and of which we
derive our ability to theorize, perceive, explain, imagine, etc. One could joke and say that the reality of
nonexistence,
to us
, is simply nonexistent! Although this is the case, as mentioned before, we can at
least attempt or try to endeavour on the “unendeavourable” in understanding what it is theoretically.
That being said, one should not be mislead in thinking this paper is the answer to the total and
true apprehension, or even the beginning of an apprehension, of this mysterious Realm of Nonexistence.
Rather, this paper is only to act as a vehicle of the manifestation of thought provocation into this subject.
In other words, it is to be a spark to ignite you, the reader, into thinking deeper within your own reality
and existence in the terms and ideas laid of for you in this paper. It is for you to begin to ask the next
questions of this “puzzle”, and perhaps create your own insight into our existence.
II. The State and Realm of the Nonexistence
Previously this paper has only just touched on the introduction of defining what nonexistence
actually is. It is fair, then, to expound in greater detail and explanation (to the extent that our finite,
existencebounded minds allow for), as to what is meant by the State or the Realm of Nonexistence.
Using statements such as, “There is being and there is nonbeing.” and “There is something and there is
nothing.”, set the tone in defining what is meant by the realm and the State of Nonexistence.
The two terms “State” and “Realm” may be assumed as synonyms but in the context of this
paper, they are not. Rather, they compliment one another and are contingent upon each other. The
definition of the word “state” itself is the way of living or existing. It could also be defined as the mode,
expression, way, condition, quality, or even essence of the existence of a particular something.
Subsequently, in this case, the State of Nonexistence would be defined as nonexistence in and of itself
and in all that it is comprised of qualitatively. Since by even attempting to define this term does so within
the bounds of our reality of existence, the definition of the State of Nonexistence, contextually, is simply
the absence of all that is or consists of the Realm of Existence or Being we now reside and have our being
and existence within. It is not only the total absence of the Realm of this Being but also its very
state
(as
defined in the definition of state itself). For the Realm of either being or nonbeing, existence or
nonexistence in its quality or essence subsists, comprises, and ever gives birth to their inherent
Realms.
Bringing realm into the conversation, we must of necessity also try to define what is meant by “realm”.
The term “realm” itself is defined as being a sphere, domain, and area. With that being said, what
is meant by realm in the context of this paper? Simply stated, realm is the “framework” or “expanse”
wherein subsides and is totally made up of and comprised of its state. Resorting to Hellenic philosophical
terms, state is “ουσια”, or the very essence of either being or nonbeing; realm is the figurative, theoretical
“dwellingplace” which is comprised of this state. However, as warned before, using such terms invoke
the existence in which we find ourselves in now, and tempt us to think in material, spatial, and finite
terms, rather than theoretical and hypothetical terms. Similarly, when using these terms of “state” and
“realm”, out of necessity the word “existence or being” or the verbs “to exist, to be, to subside, etc.” are
used. This is due to the realm or framework in which we find ourselves in which is constantly existing. It
is in this limitation that even the very defining of these terms in relation to something that is nonexistent,
is difficult in achieving.
In order to allow one’s mind to understand this, using what we know within our current realm of
being, the following illustration could be used. Let us allow our brains to think as far back as we are able
to, then progress chronologically through all of the thoughts of all that you have experienced in any way
up until this present point of reference. Now, stand up, and make a full rotation around the room or space
wherein you find yourself. Open your eyes while still holding onto the thoughts you collected, and
observe your surroundings. Proceed to go outside if you are not already there. While there, continue to
observe your immediate surroundings. Let each of your five senses perceive and take in all it can around
you. Take into account all of the plant life, animal life, and human life around you. Now look up into the
sky. Whether it be night or day, you can see the heavens surround you. It may have, at some point in your
life, brought you to ponder what lies beneath. Perhaps you have seen pictures of satellite photography in
space, or computer simulations of space and what we currently know about the universe. A plethora of
stars and planets, and many unknown celestial realities of our universe lay beyond that sky you now see.
Close your eyes, clearing your mind of all distractions, and only think of all of what has been previously
mentioned. Simply think of your current existence and everything you have ever experienced therein. All
of the people you have met, and all of the people you have yet to meet. All of what you know, and all of
what you have yet to know. All that you know exists or is said to exist, and all that we have yet to find
existing. Within the darkness of your mind, imagine as if all of these things ceased to be. As though, when
opening your eyes, you would find all that you knew to cease to be including yourself, your thoughts,
your actions, your memories, and all within the existence of the universe and realm we reside in. Of
course, now having opened your eyes, you still find yourself in the same place and state you were as
before, yet the question of what if all of this was absent must come to our minds. What if all that we
know, all of reality that we perceive, all things that exist, that have or will occur, were absent and ceased
to be? What would be instead? With this illustration and these questions, we allow our minds to begin to
enter into the State of Nonexistence and its subsequent realm. During your imagining, you perceived all
that was within the Realm of Existence. All within this realm subsists and is contingent upon the State of
Existence (i.e the essence of the realm). Conversely, what would the Realm of Nonexistence in the State
of Nonexistence be like? That we cannot truly know due to the limitation discussed. However,
hypothetically it would be the absence of all the State of Existence and therefore the absence of the realm
in which the State of Existence find itself. Where and when the Realm of Existence does not exist, there is
the Realm of Nonexistence. It is this concept which brings us back to the terms “the absolute darkness”
and “the total void”, though they are insufficient in precisely portraying the Realm of Nonexistence. Let
us explore, then, the hypothetical perception of this Realm of Nonexistence.
III. Its Hypothetical Perception
How exactly would this Realm of Nonexistence (which, as previously explained, would be
comprised of the essence or State of Nonbeing) be like? In other words, how would we, stuck within the
Realm of Existence, perceive and experience the Realm of Nonexistence? This is a question of which the
answer cannot truly be known or experienced; for even the mere mention of the Realm of Nonexistence
is entering into the theoretical, which is transcendent in comparison to our Realm. We can, at least in so
far as our minds trapped within this realm allow us, can venture to perceive hypothetically, what this
Realm would be like and entail.
What would encompass the Realm of Nonexistence? Simply the State of Nonexistence (the total
absence of what we know in this Realm of Existence) would encompass it. Yet, we must ask ourselves
what this means. For if all the metaphysical and physical realities of this Realm of Existence dwell herein,
could a reality which
is
(not necessarily speaking in terms of
within
the Realm of Existence)
and
encompasses the very reality of that Realm? A reality which would encompass that mystery of the eternal
within the mystery of the Realm of Existence. However, in asking one question like these, other questions
arise. What would eternity be like in the Realm of Nonexistence, for would it not be the absence of time
as we know in this Realm of Existence? Deducing from what has been explained earlier, the Realm of
Nonexistence is the absence of the State of Existence and consequently its Realm. The question of time
leads to a whole new exposition in itself. For, we perceive time within our Realm of Existence as
something which is, at its core, a point of reference for rational agents such as human beings. We have
organized the concept we call “time” into a system which assists us in our day to day lives, and which
better allows us to grasp the idea of time itself. We live and breath in a 365 day year, comprised of 12
months, which is further comprised of either three or four 7 day weeks, consisting of 24 hour days, 1,440
minutes, 86,400 seconds, and so on and so forth. Within the field of philosophy the concept of time and if
it exists has been discussed before. For the sake of not invoking an argument, let us hypothetically assume
that time, in its actuality, did not exist. Instead, time would simple be the everpresent now, with the past
and the future and everything in between (i.e, simply various reference points of this everpresent now).
In other words, points of time are simply slices of the same pie (the everpresent now). Now, bringing our
attention back to the question of whether or not time existing in the Realm of NonExistence, we must go
back and examine time in relation to the State of Existence. This is necessary in order to establish how
time would be perceived within the Realm of Nonexistence, for the Realm of Nonexistence, by
definition, the Realm which is of the absence of the State of Existence or Being.
The very essence of the Realm of Existence is one of being transitory. By being “composed” or
“indwelled with” (for lack of better terms) of the State of Existence, does not necessarily mean that it is of
an eternal nature or essence. Indeed, if there exists a Realm of Nonexistence (the opposite and absence of
the State of Existence), by necessity, the Realm of Existence would be of a transitory, temporal, or finite
nature. For, as stated before, where and when the Realm of Existence does not exist, there is the Realm of
Nonexistence. Using words such as “where” and “when” invoke ideas of spatiality and chronology. And
one must not be confused with such terms. However, simply stating, because both Realms exist and both
States exists, they are essentially the contrast of each other. This means that one precedes the other and
gives “birth” to the other. Logically speaking, the Realm of NonExistence would have existed before the
Realm of Existence, and in an eternal, everlasting, timeless manner. For all things finite (which would be
of the State of Existence), have in themselves a beginning. Since the Realm of Nonexistence is the
absence of the State of Existence, it has no time (in the sense of time which is of the State of Existence),
no matter, no space, etc. It is, as we have said the “complete void”. Since the Realm of Nonexistence
lacks time, it’s “time” (so we shall call it) is of the State of Nonexistent. Contrasting time which is
experienced finitely within the Realm of Existence, this “time” of the State of Nonexistence, would be of
a timeless nature. Meaning, it is infinite, eternal, and everlasting. To try and contemplate more of the
hypothetical perception of the Realm of Nonexistence is to enter into something we ourselves cannot
grasp, as it has been repeated before. However, with what we have discovered with our limited reasoning
that this Realm of Nonexistence, in its State of Nonexistence, would be the lack or absence of the State
of Existence, and thus by necessity
preceding
it, and having no contingency upon the former State of
Existence. Also, because it is the absence of
all
that is of the State of Existence, this absence would entail
the absence of time as perceived within the State of Existence, and thus the State of Nonexistence would
be “timeless”, without time, “eternal”. Other absences that are of the State of Existence include the
absence of matter, material finite realities or manifestations, thought processes, and anything with a
beginning, with an end, or simply all that is of the State of Existence. So much more could be covered and
hypothetically “perceived” within this mystery. And even in doing so, one enters into other mysteries
(such as, in this case, the mystery of timelessness), which are virtually impossible for one within the
Realm of Existence, bound by the State of Existence to fully and truly comprehend. With all that we have
said, though, we must see what could be the possible implications of the Realm of Nonexistence.
IV. Its Subsequent Implications
Having discussed what the Realm of Nonexistence would be perceived as, a door of how it
applies to us and all that of the State of Existence, is opened. What are the implications of the timeless,
eternal, matterless reality of the Realm of Nonexistence? One major implication is one of the very
personality of what this Nonexistence contains. By using the word “personality”, it is not to be thought of
in terms of the State of Existence and its experience of “personality”, but one which transcends what we
understand within our own Realm of Existence. The question of what was there before the Realm of
Existence, before all that we know in our present reality of being, is one that has already been answered.
Based on the very nature of both Realms, and especially of the Realm of Nonexistence, their attributes
clearly point to the personality of the Eternal One, or better known as “God”. Although the concept of
God exists in the Realm of Existence, by the very attributes of God are those possessed by the State of
Nonexistence. It may seem very ironic state that God exists, yet exists within the Realm of
Nonexistence, for the very label of “nonexistence” carries with it the misconception of the transitory
existence of the State of Existence. The existence within the State of Existence is the existence of all that
we know and perceive now in our present reality of being. On the contrary, the State of Nonexistence is
the absence of that existence; and, as we have discussed before in the former section, would include the
perfect existence of timelessness. Timelessness is within the State of Nonexistence but is not within the
State of Existence. Each States have their respective attributes. Nonexistence, with transcendent
timelessness, and Existence, with transitory, finite time. With this in our minds, let us examine the
proposed existence of God within the particular Realm of Nonexistence.
