MOBILE SCHOOL: AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH
ON THE STREETS
WHY MOBILE SCHOOL?
For more than 20 years, mobile schools for street-connected children have been rolling around all over the world.
Street educators take the mobile schools out on a daily basis to offer street-connected children the opportunity to discover
their talents and to realise their dreams. By deliberately focusing on opportunities instead of on the problems on the streets,
mobile school aims to be an open and recreational meeting place where children and youngsters are unconditionally accepted and appreciated. Through this positive approach, young people feel empowered and are able to regain a positive
self-esteem and self-image.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH ON THE STREET
The mobile school can be used by any organisation that is doing outreach work for street-connected children. We consciously
use a very broad definition of this street-connectedness. Broadly speaking, we can distinguish three main target groups at
the mobile school.
First of all, we work with children and youth who are living and working on the streets. For some of them, the streets have
become their home and as a consequence they spend 24 hours a day there. Other children do have a home, but the streets
have become an important learning environment for them, since they spend a lot of time working there to contribute to the
family income.
A second important target group are children and youth on the move. A significant number of the refugees, migrants, asylum
seekers and other nomadic groups such as the Roma are minors. In most cases, they need to adapt themselves to a
completely new reality in difficult circumstances and they often lack the opportunities and the environment to simply enjoy
their childhood and to develop themselves.
Finally, there are children and youth hanging around on the streets. In Europe, we meet a lot of young people who only
attend school part-time or not at all and are hanging around on the streets due to social problems at home. Our partners pull
out the mobile school for these youngsters, to give them the opportunity to work on key topics such as self-esteem, identity
and talent-development.
FROM APPLICATION TO IMPLEMENTATION
All our (potential) partners go through an elaborate process, before and after the implementation of a mobile school. This
process-oriented approach is a key aspect in our work on the streets and with our partners. Regular activities on the streets
and frequent training seminars for the local street educators are key to realise sustainable impact. This way we guarantee
long-lasting and qualitative outreach acitivities.
INNOVATIONS
Besides our innovative approach on the streets, we invest in different tools to increase our impact on street-connected
children. We are constantly developing new educational games and activities. On top of that, the newly developed, lighter
design of the mobile school makes it easier for street educators to access hard-to-reach intervention areas.
Furthermore, we support street educators with training conducted by qualified trainers in the different phases of the partnership. Street educators can also count on extensive digital support. Thanks to our online database and learning platform, street
workers have easy access to interactive information about the mobile school methodology, games and activities. We recently
developed a digital tool, so that our partners can easily register information about the children they work with during
outreach sessions. That way, they can tailor their activities to their target group and register the impact they have on the
streets, improving the quality of their work even more.

Mobile School Group invests in sustainable development,
focusing especially on bringing street children, school children and
professionals together to strengthen their activities and projects.
This is done through non-formal education on the street with mobile
schools, educational campaigns at schools and StreetwiZe talent and
leadership develoment programs in companies.

STREETWIZE AT CRUISING SPEED!
In 2008 the non-profit organisation Mobile School took a remarkable decision: generate
our own means and no longer depend on philanthropy or subsidies. Mobile School Group
became a hybrid social entreprise. StreetwiZe was born! Sustainable talent and leadership
development, inspired by the strength of outperformers on the streets, that is what we offer
to the employees, managers and executives of entire organisations. All profits of StreetwiZe
are invested to scale up the social impact of Mobile School. We have been able to write a
modest success story with an annual turnover of +30%, resulting in big impact on the
street-connected children and the companies we work for.
Together with our activities, we expanded our portfolio, our team and our experiences. Let’s summarise:
EXTENSIVE PORTFOLIO - Next to the 4 Street Skills (Positive Focus, Agility & Resilience, Proactive Creativity and Cooperative Competition), we now also train people in the 4 supporting Street Techniques (Pitching, Storytelling, Leading Change and
Connect), which gives us more building blocks to tailor our interventions to the individual needs of each client.
A BIG IMPACT - On top of the intensive half-day workshops about all these topics, XL-versions of our workshops have been
developed as a variety, including coaching and/or intervision. That way we increase the impact of our interventions.
EXPERIENCE-BASED EXPEDITIONS - Besides the international StreetwiZe expedition, a new StreetwiZe expedition in
Belgium has been developed and an Executive Expedition (C-level, international) is in the making. Unique and authentic
experiences as a basis for sustainable personal and leadership development.
MORE INSPIRATION - Our founder Arnoud Raskin is a frequently sollicited keynote speaker in Belgium and abroad. A third
edition of his book, ‘StreetwiZe – lessons of street children for the leader of today’ is being printed as we speak.
