Topics Covered in the SMLE Examination
The SMLE, or Saudi Medical Licensing Examination, is the examination required for physicians in Saudi Arabia to legally
practice. Like the licensing examinations in other countries around the world, the questions are very diverse. Passing the
exam proves that students have studied and learned what they need to know to practice medicine. The SMLE exam
covers several topics, and you can learn more about these below.
Much of the SMLE covers topics based on generalized and specialized medicine. These questions may be very specific
and focus on things like abnormal ECGs or overdoses on over-the-counter medicines, but they may also be quite broad
and focus on a specialty of medicine. Some of the specialties covered in the SMLE Medicine topic include oncology,
gastroenterology, pulmonology, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, and much, much more.
Some of the questions on the SMLE are directly related to pediatrics, which is the term used to describe medical care
given to children. The Pediatrics topic covers a variety of different questions related to healthcare, including questions
that prove you know how to diagnose and treat many different conditions. Students will find questions about everything
from the Apgar score, which is used to rate the health of a newborn, to childhood bullying, which can have a
tremendous impact on the wellbeing of a child.
OBGYN stands for obstetrics and gynecology, and this topic is all about women’s health before, during, and after
pregnancy. Gynecology refers to the care of the female reproductive and pelvic organs while obstetrics refers to fertility,
pregnancy, and newborn care. Students will find questions related to infertility, menstruation, Caesarean section
delivery, placental abruption, abortion, preterm labor, and more.
Psychiatry is all about studying and treating patients for emotional problems, abnormal behaviors, and mental illnesses.
The SMLE examination covers psychiatry in depth, and you may be asked to answer a variety of questions. These are
based on topics such as alcohol or drug dependence, depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, chronic pain,
anorexia and bulimia, and other conditions that may be psychological in nature.
The SMLE also contains a section on surgical medicine, which can be defined as the treatment of disorders, illnesses, or
injury with incision or physical manipulation. Some of the topics covered in the surgery section include things like
appendicitis, basic life support, anesthesia, cancer, sepsis, fractures, and other things that may require surgical
PMCH (Preventative Medicine & Community Health)
Finally, there will be questions on the SMLE that focus on preventative medicine and community health, or PMCH, which
is a term used to define the techniques used to contain illnesses and promote good health throughout an area or
community. Students will be asked to answer questions based on things like nutrition, vitamins and nutrients, substance
toxicity, STDs, pregnancy prevention, prophylaxis, the physician-patient relationship, and more.
The SMLE examination is incredibly diverse, and students need to start preparing well in advance if they hope to do well.
Sample questions and study groups make up two of the absolute best ways to learn everything there is to know for the
Saudi Medical Licensing Examination.
