ANCIENT OLD CITY, SAFED (TZFAT)
The Ancient City of Safed is spelled in various ways that includes: Safed, Zefat, Tsfat,
Zfat, Safad, Safes, Safet, Tzfat, etc. Ever Since the 16th century, the old city of Tzfat
has been known as the center of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) and is one of the four
holy cities in Israel. The old city of Tzfat is situated on a mountaintop that features
cobbled narrow streets and alleys built like a maze where visitors can find it quite an
interesting adventure to find their way around in the first day or two.
The population of Tzfat is a mix of Jews that include: Hasidic Jews, Bleslov Jews,
artists, and mellow laid back hippies from the 70's who are American immigrants that
have adapted Tzfat as their home.
Today, the main attractions of Tzfat are the mystical Jewish Quarter (Synagogue
Quarter) with many ancient synagogues and the Artists’ Colony (Artists' Quarter)
featuring Art and Galleries. The ancient alleys of the Old City and occasional views
of the Galilee Mountains provide picturesque photography opportunities.
Visitors will find majority of the alleys in the old city wheelchair accessible. However,
there are some very steep inclines in Tzfat where the surface can be slippery during
inclement weather
In the old city’s maze of cobbled narrow alleys and ancient Jerusalem stone
stairways, you’ll discover abundance of ancient synagogues, crumbling stone homes
with blue doorways, art galleries, artists’ studios and young men in white knitted
Kippahs or Black bowler hats.
Visitors will discover some parts of Tsfat look like a shtetl (ghetto) built of ancient
stones imported from the Old City of Jerusalem, but the presence of so many mystics
and spiritual seekers creates a distinctly adventurous atmosphere.
During July and August, and during the Passover and Sukkot holidays, Tzfat is
crowded with tourists from within Israeli and from abroad, and the city’s Cafes and
Restaurants stay open until late at night. During the Safed Klezmer Music Festival,
around August 18-20, available rooms in the Old City of Tzfat become fully booked.

SAFED IN THE SNOW
Winter, on the other hand, attracts sunbirds who flock to experience Safed in The
Snow. The first major snowfall starts between December and February. It is also a
time where the guesthouses in the old city catch up on renovation projects in
readiness for the next year’s tourist season. Also, the winter is the only time of the year
where Artists' Quarter artists have free time to catch up on work left over from the
summer tourist season.

The Old City of Safed is the most spectacular sight to see in the snow. Many visitors
flock to Safed once they hear of the first sign of snow just to see The Old City of Safed
covered in white blankets of snow turning Safed into a winter wonder land.

ARTIST’S QUARTER

The Artists' Quarter is situated just south of the Old Jewish Quarter (Synagogue
Quarter). One of the main attractions of the Artists' Quarter is the Great Stairs—also
known as the Stairway to Heaven by local kabbalists—that stretches from Jerusalem
Street to Keren HaYesod Street, the border that separates the Jewish and Artists'
Quarters of the old city of Tzfat.
The boom of the Artists’ Quarter began just after 1948 war of independence when at
the time, no public funded art galleries existed in Israel. To make the Artist Quarter
more attractive and persuade Artists' to live in Tzfat, the State of Israel provided
incentives (free house and gallery) to any Artist willing to live in Tzfat for at least 180
days a year.
Artists' throughout the land of milk and honey were attracted by Tzfat's picturesque
landscapes and ancient narrow cobblestone alleys made of Jerusalem stone. Some
local artists' in Tzfat are inspired by kabbalah and spectacular landscapes around the
old city of Tzfat where they could host expeditions for art lovers from around the
world.
