Don’t believe the false promises!
AFFILIATING
with
AFSCME
WILL:
DESTROY our chance to change unions
ONLY BENEFIT THE LOCAL 1 GENERAL
MANAGER AND STAFF
COST US MORE for the same bad representation
Say NO to another bad deal
for Local 1 Members!

Dear Co-Workers:
In case you have not heard, Local 1 and AFSCME are in the final steps of an
affiliation. We are writing you to inform you of our opposition to PEU, Local 1’s
attempt to affiliate with AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal
Employees). We strongly believe that this affiliation attempt is NOT in our best interest
and is a BAD DEAL for hardworking public employees.
1. WE LOSE OUR CHOICE TO CHANGE UNIONS. Once Local 1 affiliates with
AFSCME, the door to getting a better union would be shut tight. We are stuck
with Local 1. Those of us who have bene dissatisfied with Local 1 and have
looked to other unions would be trapped. Do we really want to give up our ability
to choose another union?
2. NO VALUE OR BENEFIT TO MEMBERS AND EMPLOYEES. Under the
affiliation deal Local 1 continues with its same leadership and staff and affiliates
directly with the AFSCME International Union. There is no new or different
representation for addressing our grievances, work problems or negotiating our
contracts—the matters that are most important.
3. LOCAL 1 STAFF ARE THE MAIN WINNERS. The only group benefitting
from the affiliation would be the Local 1 General Manager and other staff who
get to protect their high paying jobs from our ability to seek other unions and
associations to represent us.
4. IT WILL COST US MORE EVERY MONTH. Our dues will likely nearly double
(going from 1% of our monthly pay to 1.8%) with a large percentage of our dues
money ($12.90 per member per month going directly to AFSCME International,
and not to our own direct services).
5. WE’VE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE. In the 1970’s Local 1 was part of
AFSCME. The relationship was a failure and Local 1 left AFSCME to become an
independent association. More recently the current Local 1 members in Merced
County decertified AFSCME because of problems with representation.
Whether you are a loyal Local 1 supporter or have been unhappy with Local, 1 THIS
AFFILIATION IS A BAD DEAL. To analyze it fully we need more information and are
calling on Local 1 to hold TOWN HALL MEETINGS before we go to a vote. However, from
what we know now, we are firmly against this affiliation.
