Deals.Woot RIP: November 24, 2009 – July 31, 2016
JUL 29, 2016 1:59 PM
Gossip Girl. L.A. Law. Breaking Bad. All good things that eventually came to an end. Now Deals.Woot
joins them in the place beyond the mists. Because at midnight on July 31, after 2,442 days of glory,
Deals.Woot will close its virtual doors.
We’d like to thank all of our community members, deal posters, sponsored companies, and anyone
else we may have forgotten. We've made this hard decision so we can focus on other areas of the
site, ones that are growing in popularity and require more resources than ever before. Or, to be
poetic, to grow a lovely tree one must prune branches to protect the trunk.
Consider this thread yours, to talk about the good times you had in deals, all the magical in-jokes
you shared, and all the memories that we made over the past seven years. Just please remember:
PG-13. We don’t want those lingerie debates starting all over again.
We are postponing the close to noon on Monday, 8/1.
Of the platform, this remains one of my favorite UIs. I was sad to see it underutilized and
I'm sad to see it go. But I think it's the right decision.
JUL 29, 2016 4:52 PM
Figured I'd stop in to say goodbye, too. There's definitely some sadness in seeing
deals.woot go, but it's understandable (and in some ways preferable to it languishing).

Interesting. All the "regulars", known in other parts of the world as a cabal, lament the site. Others,
meh. A core group of net bullies drove off other users of the site with their inside jokes, coordinated
group votes (cabal member? UP! Everyone else? DOWN!), and "tattling" to admins. They all mention
the site becoming humorless, but in reality if it wasn't their humor, it was offensive. And down voted.
Really, woot jumped the shark a couple years ago. I come to the site out of an old, bad habit. Click
on each tab, vote in the stupid polls, and move on. Reading all the teary eyed tributes and goodbyes
from "old friends" simply reminds me of what became one of the causes of that shark jump.
pffft ... Godbye. Good riddance.
JUL 30, 2016 11:11 AM
Fare thee well everybody.
JUL 30, 2016 11:44 AM
@mfladd: Thanks! Just wish they'd make full knightly armor with a little more room in the chest.
Until then, I'm still stuck wearing these breast plates, but I still have my spear and magic helmet!
JUL 30, 2016 12:08 PM
What can I say that hasn't been said...nothing really.
I've come and gone over the years as my life ebbed and flowed, but it was always the community
that drew me back in the end. I haven't bothered with the deal side much lately, having been years
since I posted a deal and months since I voted for one. It's been increasingly frustrating to see the
shill postings/voting/questions and my visits have slipped from once a day to once every week or
Sad, but not sad. Sad that the site went to heck in a hand-basket after the dream team left, but not
sad to stop feeling obligated to come pay my respects to a dying forum.
RIP & RIM (Rest In Peace & Resurrect In Meh)
JUL 30, 2016 12:16 PM
Painting all with such a broad brush is unfair. Not all of the regulars were dicks. Not all of the
regulars downvoted anyone EVER.
Some of us had a wide base of what we consider humor. Be it twisted or slightly blue, straight
slapstick, or groaningly awful Dad jokes, by and large, it all could be found here at Deals. I know I
tried to ignore pissy-mood members & move on (except in the case of @Iggz. That trouble child...he
made me laugh even when he tried so hard to stir up trouble).
Yes, some pearl-clutchers took offense at certain deals, especially lingerie ("dear god, it's all porn
with slut models!"), & some people weren't happy with some inner workings of the Deals site itself,
but overall, the Deals community was a group of solid & decent folks who were kind & helpful. These
people went out of their way to assist others who were having a difficult go at life, on their own time
and own dime.
I'm sorry your experience here wasn't as pleasant as mine. I wish you well.
JUL 30, 2016 12:37 PM
Greetings all-- It's been a few years; Looking back at my old posts, apparently I was deals rep
9/100 or something; After the site redesign, I asked Woot to deactivate my account in protest.
Snapster and the gang started something amazing here, perhaps were the origin of Amazon's
Lightning Deals. I don't have quite as many memories here as some of you, but liked to chime in
from time to time. I do still have a house filled with Roombas, Dysons, Espresso machines,
Thinkpads, LeakFrogs, and hundreds of other pieces of $10 plastic I probably could have done
without. Farewell deals.woot!

It has been a very long time coming. This forum was a lot of fun in its heyday, but it is now a shadow
of its former self. See you on the other side!

JUL 30, 2016 3:17 PM
It's nice to see so many names from the past that I haven't seen in years posting.
HA! Still a purple triangle!
There are lots of comments echoing my sentiments regarding the site and it is truly sad to see it go
but it's understandable at the same time.
I remember being invited to the site to help it grow. Then as others have mentioned, the beginning
of other elements (q, local, etc).
It was always a fantastic surprise to open gifts from @jumbowoot. It felt like this site was family.
Many nights were spent staying up reading comments, looking at deals and posting a few video
game deals when they good.
After a brief hiatus, I've checked the site daily, even though the shilling overshadowed any good
deals.woot you will be missed, and I am sad to see you go. This morning I raise my coffee cup to
you one last time and offer you a salute to all that you were, all that you are and all that you could
Peace out dog!
To all the black triangles that have existed, kudos to you for being here!

@hobbitss: Re-integrated into the mainframe is my guess. That is, unless a mad man in a blue box

the deals didn't suck, too.
But then that all changed. I stopped posting like a lot of the others around here.
Sad to see it go. It could've still been something great if Woot had cared about it.

I only returned to the site because I received the email announcing the death of it. I haven't

To a Web Page Dying Young,
Amazon it was an awesome entity all on its own. Now it's not. Ciao deals.woot.
At this point I guess it is more of a mercy killing.
I really miss what it was.
I suspect it wont be too much longer before woot.com just redirects to amazon.
Life goes on.
So long and thanks for all the flying monkeys!
JUL 30, 2016 5:24 PM
I was one of the many who spent a lot of time on DW many moons ago, but alas it's been "dead" for
years. Can't say I'm truly sad to see it go given the lack of interest as of late, though it's worth
acknowledging the fact that new overlord neglect is what led to disinterest and disassociation--not
an evolution of users towards actually wanting to pay more for stuff. :P
RIP DW, and most of all RIP pinchecat (? - 11/17/2011).
JUL 30, 2016 5:32 PM
@lavikinga: none the less, a large contingent of regulars ran roughshod over anyone that wasn't
part of the "cool" crowd. And woot let them do it. And I left deals because of it. I never cried or
complained about It, I just left. Like I'm doing with woot. I'm actually surprised my comment above
was noticed, and therefore hasn't been voted down into the depths by the "old crew."
Sorry to rain on your hug-fest.
If there's a shark jump in online retail, woot did it.
JUL 30, 2016 6:16 PM

I can't believe it's been this long. This was a happenin' site for a while there! Acutally people from
here were some of the first people I met when I moved to Seattle in 2011! ADQ took us to tour the
woot offices at Amazon. #deals.woot chat still lives, though!
JUL 30, 2016 6:37 PM
@klacour: Perhaps those of us who have come to give a final "so long" view the past through
rose-colored glasses. No matter where one goes on the internet, or in life for that matter, there will
always be a group who appear more closely knit than the rest, part of the inner circle.
Most of us remain on the outside looking in. For me, it was one of those rare moments I got to sit at
the cool kids table at lunch and was given the opportunity to interact with some truly fantastic

shark jumping and roughshodding BS you speak of happened SO LONG ago. I can't believe anyone
is still dwelling on it. People are reflecting on the time it was good. You clearly are complaining
about it, because you came here as your last chance to air some literally years old grievances about
a cool kids club. It just really smells of stale butthurt. Not that you didn't have a right to come say it,
but I think that's really why your comment got all this attention.
