Hydrogen Generation System
Hydrogen production is the family of industrial methods for generating hydrogen. Currently the
dominant technology for direct production is steam reforming from hydrocarbons. Many other
methods are known including electrolysis and thermolysis.
Hydrogen generation system offers small scale hydrogen generation systems that can generate
hydrogen at the end users site. On-site hydrogen supply by the hydrogen generation
system increases the reliability of supply and decrease the costs.
A reliable supply of process gases plays a vital role in most industries. Currently, these gases are
mainly supplied by electrolysis or road transportation of compressed or liquefied gas. Hydrogen
generation system offers small scale on-site hydrogen generation systems ranging from 5 Nm3/h
up to 100 Nm3/h. This makes them highly suitable to be installed at industrial sites and hydrogen
The Hydrogen generation systems produce hydrogen by converting natural gas with Steam
Methane Reforming. Decentralised hydrogen production offers a safer, more reliable and costeffective alternative to conventional hydrogen supply by tube trailers or electrolysers and
significantly lowers the environmental impact.

Hydrogen generation system uses its proprietary reforming technology to generate a hydrogen
rich stream from natural gas. To ensure long lifetime, high system efficiency and avoid catalyst
deactivation, the natural gas is stripped from sulphur before it is led into the reformer.
Effective PSA technology
Hydrogen generation system uses vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption technology. This is more
energy and cost efficient than traditional gas separation systems The Pressure Swing Adsorption
consists of four parallel active vessels, enabling a continuous cleaning process. In the Pressure
Swing Adsorption, the hydrogen is separated from other gaseous species under elevated pressure
by using differences in adsorption properties.
Optimised energy efficiency
By re-using the waste gases and waste heat of the process, the energy efficiency of the Hydrogen
generation system is optimised to the highest level. No external fuel gases are needed for the
reform reaction and steam generation. The off-gas from the Pressure Swing Adsorption is used
as input for the burner that provides heat for the reforming reaction. The residual heat is used for
generating steam, which is mixed with natural gas for the steam reforming process.
The system includes gas desulphurisation and water purification and can therefore be connected
directly to the natural gas and feed water lines. Other required connections are electricity for
controls and auxiliaries, hydrogen and nitrogen for system start-up and compressed air for
Proton OnSite's hydrogen generation systems use a platinum catalyst and Proton Exchange
Membrane (PEM) technology to split deionized water into its constituent parts.
When a DC voltage is applied to the electrolyzer, water molecules at the anode are oxidized to
oxygen and protons, while electrons are released. The protons (H+ ions) pass through the PEM to
the cathode where they meet electrons from the other side of the circuit, reducing to hydrogen
Hydrogenics has built a unique expertise since decades in delivering hydrogen generators
systems for power plants. Hydrogen is vital for a power plant and we have thus developed a
solution to meet this requirement.
Therefore, we offer complete packages to deliver hydrogen in a safe and reliable way to cool
down your generators with no concessions on quality of our equipment, following the highest
industrial standards. This ensures you hydrogen availability at all time with the best quality/cost
system available on the market and a knowledgeable partner to support you from tender process
through installation, startup and after-sales service.
The Hydrogen Generation System produces 10 Nm³/hr by utilizing Proton Exchange
Membrane (PEM) cell stacks and Pressure Swing Adsorption technology to produce ultra-high
purity hydrogen for various applications some of which include materials processing,
semiconductor fabrication, hydrogenation, energy storage, etc. These generators achieve
extreme purity and composition certainty with minimal maintenance. This series
benefits hydrogen users by improving supply reliability and site safety, while also
reducing hydrogen storage space.
