Wrestling with Addiction
Liza Williams Pitch
Wrestling with Addiction Overview
Wrestling with Addiction will follow an overweight former
drug addict as they journey into the world of professional
wrestling, an industry that has had its own battles with drug
abuse and addiction.
Meeting with wrestling talent and promoters we will explore
how steroids, drug abuse and early deaths among wrestlers
have tainted the industry in the past and have been a catalyst
for the world leading promotion, WWE, to introduce regular
drug testing for its athletes.
The former addict continues a complete revitalisation of his
diet and fitness and steps into the wrestling ring for the first
time to learn how to perform. Over the next few months his
body will be bruised and battered as he aims for the ultimate
goal of becoming a professional wrestler.
The documentary will also explore the prevalence of drug abuse and
addiction in the United Kingdom, any link between long term drug use
and adverse mental health effects, the policing of the ‘war on drugs’
and also whether legalising and regulating the drug market could ever
be a possibility.
Ultimately, Wrestling with Addiction will be an investigative film exploring the
always topical issue of drug abuse and addiction, in the wrestling industry as
well as wider society, set against the personal journey of the former addict
cutting their teeth in the wrestling business. The documentary will culminate
with the former addict making their debut in the wrestling ring.
My name is Danny Watts and I am the former addict. In 2004, aged 12, I began
using Cannabis and was soon using Ecstasy and regularly abusing solvents.
Eventually I was using Cocaine and Crack-Cocaine and while working for an
insurance company became dependent upon alcohol and MDMA and was
regularly attending work under the influence of drugs or

alcohol. My mental health was suffering and after being
hospitalised a number of times and being told by my GP that
if I carry on doing what I was doing I would die I finally
committed to living my life drug free.
Why I am contacting you
I have recently discovered you after viewing Drugs Map of
Britain through BBC Three which you filmed, produced and
directed and I am contacting you to ask for feedback on my
idea or for you to consider taking the idea forward and working with me on it.
Wrestling with Addiction can be produced on a relatively low budget and would
be made up of approximately 10 filming days spread over a 12 – 15 month
period. I am committed to achieving my goals anyway but believe we can
create an inspiring film that would be well received not only by the general
public but especially by wrestling fans. This document is just a brief overview of
the idea and I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss it with you further if
it is of interest.
