Understanding the Uses of the PDH Multiplexer in Networks
PDH actually stands for Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy which is a popular technology used in
the telecommunication networks. This specific technology is especially used to transport the
large amount of data over the digital transport equipment like microwave radio systems and fibre
optic systems. The typical digital transport networks’ backbone is currently replaced by the PDH
networks with the SONET or SDH hierarchy.

What is PDH?
The Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy or PDH basically allows the transmission of the digital
data streams which are normally running at the equal rate. But it allows the same variation on the
speed approximately a normal rate. In the digital networks, multiplexer equipment plays a vital
role to increase the speed of transporting the data over the network. Now days, you can find the
PDH multiplexer in the market. It is actually a multiplexer equipment of the telecommunication
digital network based on the PDH technology.
It is also known as the third order skip multiplexer or demultiplexer unit for the data
transmission. The multiplexer unit with the Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy technology will
multiplex the 16 and 2.048 Mbps E1 tributaries into the single 34. 368 Mbps E3 tributary. This
multiplexer cum demultiplexer unit will also do the reverse process of the demultiplexing the
received 34 Mbps stream into the 16 and 2 Mbps E1 tributaries.
Highlights and Features of PDH Multiplexer Unit:
The following are the highlights and features of the PDH multiplexer equipment or unit in the
digital networks.

Plug and Play multiplexer
Single card implementation
Standard CCITT (ITU-T) complaint interfaces
Modular 2 Mbps transmission units
TCP/IP remote access to monitor the alarms and also management
It is capable of synchronizing on any of the clock resources of 34368 kHz whether it is
external, internal, or extracted.

TCP/IP Remote and RS232 local terminal monitoring and also control by the
telecommunication network management system
Distributed on-board power supply
Service bit monitoring & also insertion
Highly compact and reliable device for the digital networks
Powerful diagnostic facilities to control the microprocessor for both local and remote
Stored program controlled
Remote and also local loopback facility for streaming 34 Mbps
Operates on the supposed – 48 V DC input

This system or equipment is deployed independently with the industrial standard OLTE for the
different applications.
The multiplier equipment with the PDH technology will be highly helpful to find the absence
and presence of the remote terminal along with the status of alarm. Both the multiplexing and
demultiplexing operations in the digital telecommunications network will be easily and
effectively possible with this simple equipment with the Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy
