Heesan A DM I SSI ONS

i. age 7, soojung’s eternal love.
continuous, loud squeals can be heard from the jung household. it was christmas, her most awaited
day of the year. her thrill was evident with the way she excitedly rushed over and tore the wrapping
paper off the big, rather obvious present. it was a big, mahogany piano, yet to soojung, it was her first
love. despite her age, soojung was very gifted when it came to the piano. through her determination as
well as her passion for the instrument, she has easily become an expert with the keys. a year and half
a month later, she begins to take an interest into writing and composing music. starting from simple
nursery rhymes to different piano pieces.
although young, she knew she wanted to spend her whole life with music.
ii. age 10, the beginning of the end.
her first recital was a success. soojung’s parents were sure of her future now. she was one of the few
people that different scouts from different countries, some that one can’t even pronounce the first time.
an exhausted but quite bright smile was plastered on soojung’s face that night as she prepared to go
home. although at a loss for her older sister was elsewhere for her studies, she was still quite satisfied.
her little, flimsy arms were filled with different applications and brochures along with her little fur coat
as she exited the establishment.
all was well only for the jung family to meet a terrible fate. with the chauffeur’s wrong turn, everything
went to hell. all three of them managed to wake up in the hospital days later, thankfully, with injuries
that aren’t too critical.
or so they thought.
it didn’t take long enough for the family to discover soojung’s condition once the first episode
occurred. the girl developed a rare form of tinnitus, although not harmful initially, it was mentioned
that it might progressively lead to her losing her hearing completely. her young age did not hinder her
understanding of the situation. she was fully aware that she will never be the same again.
who knew her first step into being an artist was also her last.
iii. age 14, the blank canvas.

soojung tried not to look back anymore for although her memories were bright and happy, she
was bitter—bitter that she can never be her old self. krystal jung, the musical prodigy. she almost
never smiled anymore, or engaged into different activities. eventually, she gave up on school as well,
choosing to be homeschooled instead. she started distancing herself from her peers, hiding from them
whenever they chose to visit. she starts shying away from her family as well, ultimately being a ghost as
she locks herself up in her own room.
it doesn’t take her father too long to step in. he opts to bring soojung to korea, thinking that the new
environment would make the girl feel better. he introduces soojung to one of his hobbies as well—
painting. he thought it would be a good way to express herself, especially when she was the type to
keep to herself.
and finally, there was new found hope—progress.
iv. age 18, krystal the painter.
soojung easily became well-versed with a paintbrush. in a span of four years, she was able to get back
on track. specifically speaking, she entered school again, meeting new friends as well as enemies. but
she paid no mind. after all, she’s slowly being happy again. once she had developed an interest for the
arts, she became more cheerful and motivated. her old flame was rekindled and her outlet which was
from notes and keys and melodies before was replaced by paint, canvases and brush strokes. soojung
started smiling more and unconsciously found herself slowly getting involved with the arts.
one could only imagine the look on soojung’s face once she received her most awaited acceptance
letter. she was now a student of heesan university and the realization brought tears in her eyes yet a
bright, genuine smile on her lips.
