Large Air Tankers for Fire Fighting
The first attempt at creating a large air tanker for fire fighting attempted to use the concept of
a blended wing body. Some benefits of using a blended wing included a reduction in induced
drag and an increase in lift. After much scrutiny is was deemed that a blended wing aircraft
would be difficult to control and was not a mission driven design.
The final design of the large air tanker was modeled after a common
fighter jet. It included a fighter style cockpit with pilots sitting front to
back, top mounted engines and a fuselage shaped around the retardant
tank to minimize empty space. This aircraft was designed with the
mission in mind.

The simulation shows the benefits of having a blended wing
body aircraft. The entire body generates lift which is the main
benefit of a blended wing.
