During the semester so far, I have deepened my understanding of Google Docs,
and have exposed myself to the latest news in technology by reading threads within the
“In The News” discussion forums. An online class like this one is better than a class in a
traditional setting with regards to gaining an understanding of developments in
technology. If something is discussed in a traditional lecture that I am interested in
researching later, I often forget what was said by the end of class. Information in online
classes is at the click of a button, and I am able to expand my learning the way I would
like to.
The GCF Learnfree website has been the primary tool we have used so far to
learn about the basic fundamentals of a computer, and programs like Microsoft Excel
and Google Docs. From each of the links on that website within a particular unit, more
or less I have received confirmation as to whether or not I am using the programs
correctly. The website elaborates on how particular aspects of programs or technology
work in an easy to understand format. Not to mention, the pictures in the links go hand
in hand with the text, so readers are not lost at all in the process. Overall, the tutorials
on the website have plenty of useful information a new user would need.
The spreadsheets and databases modules have been the modules so far in
which I have learned the greatest amount of new information from. I had a basic idea of
what a database was before this class, but I had never had the opportunity to learn
more about databases until this class. Rather, I should say that I had never been
interested in further research on the topic. Regarding spreadsheets, I’ve used them in
the past to present data to teachers and students in other classes. I spent more time on
the third spreadsheet assignment trying to work around Google’s way of presenting grid
lines than on the first two spreadsheet assignments combined because I was doing
something I had not done prior to working on the assignment. Now that I have
familiarized myself with Google’s spreadsheet tools to some degree, creating
spreadsheets should come easier the more time I spend using the program.
I knew that taking this class online would not present much of a challenge. This
class is all about the application of learned skills to assignments. I’m sure in some
cases, this class is a struggle for folks who are learning about information systems
technologies that are completely new to them. There are many people, particularly older
adults, who know little about computers. A traditional lecture may be best for these
people as they can receive more personalized instruction.
I’m confident that I’ll continue to learn and apply skills in future modules without
much of a hitch. I’ve used Google Slides before to create several presentations. I’ve
researched and purchased a computer to my desired specifications. What I will continue
to gain is a deeper understanding of computer concepts and helpful applications.
Knowing more than just the basics will allow me to have the necessary knowledge in
order to solve my own technological problems and help others out. I also will have the
knowledge to create documents that are richer in detail. It’s a survey into the world of
computers. How challenging could a survey course like this one be? It all depends on
one’s familiarity with the subject matter.
