Art For Estates
Adding Colour to London’s Estates

Art + Believe (UK)

About GLOBAL sTREET aRT
Global Street Art’s mission is to live in painted cities. Founded in 2012, we have organised over 1,500 legal street art murals across London, working with private landlords,
councils and other institutions. Our online platform, www.globalstreetart.com, holds over 100,000 photos uploaded by artists from over 100 countries and our voice is heard
by over 350,000 fans on social media. We also have a leading agency working internationally with commercial partners all over the world.

About the project
Art for Estates is a completely free programme that increases the amount of public art in housing estates in London. We match our huge network of world-class artists, who
are looking for places to paint murals, with appropriate spaces in housing estates. We build trust and relationships with local resident associations and empower them to
select appropriate artists. Moving one step at a time, with artists that residents have approved, we organise murals only on pre-painted and unsightly surfaces. Our process
includes a number of safeguards and we maintain murals over time.

“Having art around is great for kids. That’s just undeniable. When I was
growing up, we had 3 paintings that my dad had done in the 70’s in my
house. It inspired me enormously. There are elements you can find in those
works that I still use to this day.
The PRESESNCE of art in younger developmental stages NORMALISES or
at least, de-mystifies the whole concept. Its no longer something alien that
strange people do, its something you COULD do. So in that process it
becomes graspable and more importantly ACHIVEABLE.
I’ve been part of countless projects with local councils decorating
previously dull, grey, scary subways or unimaginative youth centers. You get
approached by all aspects of the community and the responses are always
heartwarmingly positive. But the thing people always comment on is how
important COLOUR is. To be surrounded with vibrancy all year round has
great benefits.
Ed and Jo Hicks (UK)

One of the strange benefits seems to be the elimination of tags and
vandalism. Once a work of merit goes up, that wall is often ‘out of bounds’
for the youth. I have returned to pieces years later and been shocked to
find how untouched they are.”

“Painting in estates makes people feel proud of their space. Painting like
this allows me to meet local people and get to know the area a lot better.
I’ve done this in many countries and it helps me compare cultures. I think
art is so much better than a blank wall. A blank wall says nothing!”

TRANSFORMING ESTATES INTO ART GALLERIES OFFERS
COMMUNITIES A RANGE OF BENEFITS:
The Space - visibly improves the estate, turning drab and/or defaced walls into visual assets, whilst reducing nuisance tagging.
Community - supports a sense of belonging and pride, whilst stimulating conversation and participation in the arts.
Engagement - generates positive news stories and supports a sense of active estate management.

Our process:
Proposal - we meet with estate managers and/or the residents association to
discuss in depth our process including: identifying sites, proposing artists,
ensuring quality, remediation and troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance.
Survey - we survey the estate with the estate manager to identify appropriate
walls and spaces.
Engagement - we offer a town hall meeting to engage with residents if desired.
Trial - we propose one initial artist/wall, based on their style and track record.
If the artist is approved, we paint!
Painting - step by step, we continue to build trust and paint, always with
approval of the estate before each mural.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting - we remain in close contact with the estate to
address any issues and arrange for periodic re-paints of murals over time.
