a

Brazilian foundation that aids
Amazonian

communities,

Anã has received tiles for the
roof of the factory, which drastically cuts previously used thatched roof
upkeep from every three to four years to decades without any maintenance,
and cement for the foundation and walling of the factory. The design
includes an office, small kitchen, meeting room, bathroom, and
manufacturing room. The whole building will be 9 meters by 12 meters
long. The manufacturing room is 4 meters by 4 meters and will include
upgraded machinery to make the fish food process more efficient and
capable of running 24/7.

a

A History of Stingless Bees
Manulplano Bees

Originally, beehives collected from the forest were harvested directly for
their honey. Today, the process utilizing bee farms is more sustainable and
located closer to the community of Anã. The growing bee farms and
expedited method of collection meet the demand of the locals and mark the
enterprise as a key part of the economy in Anã.
To begin the process of the beehive farm, a beehive is taken from the forest
and replaced with a wooden, layered box. With the natural beehive
removed, over the course of a day the bees relocated to the surrogate hive.
The new hive is then moved to the predetermined location of the bee farm
cleared of underbrush.
To multiply the bees in the farm, part of the hive is removed and relocated
to a new, larger beehive box.

Water Filtration System

Introduction
In 2009, Anã was fortunate enough to be one of five villages in a pool of 64
to win a lottery which provided them the infrastructure to pump, filter,
store, and distribute clean water throughout the village. The lottery was
arranged by “Saude no Floresto,” an NGO which focuses on promoting the
health of rainforest-based communities. Since it’s instillation, the filtration
system has drastically increased the digestive and intestinal health of those
who use it. Also, cases of visitors contracting contaminated water-borne
illnesses have completely diminished.
They System uses an engine in an on-site maintenance house to pump water
from an underground aquifer, which is 65 meters below the surface. Ana
built it as far away from any possible contaminants to ensure the purity of
the source. Three times a day- 10:30 am, 6:00pm, and 4:00am – the engine
is run, and water is pumped into the 13,000 – liter storage tank.
