Dodds, K. 2008. The great game in Antarc8ca:
Britain and the 1959 Antarc8c Treaty.
Contemporary Bri.sh History 22 (1): 43-‐66.
The 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War indicates the
seriousness of the disputed sovereignty claims
in and related to the Antarc8c. The Antarc8c
Treaty of 1959 did not resolve the territorial
issues that remain poten8ally vola8le.
The Treaty devoted the con8nent to peaceful
scien8fic coopera8on, yet that loPy goal
provides a pretext for pursuing na8onal
interests. The Treaty was signed in the wake of
the 1957–1958 Interna8onal Geophysical Year.
This ar8cle is largely based on the diaries of a
Foreign Office adviser, Dr. Brian Roberts. His
diaries have only recently been made available,
and they provide insight into the ra8onales and
mo8va8ons of the Bri8sh diplomats.
