E.B.White was born in Mount
Vernon, New York, and graduated from
Cornell University. His writings
appeared for many years in The New
Yorker magazine.
He was awarded the 1970 Laura
Ingalls Wilder Medal for his children's
books
STUART
LITTLE
and
CHARLOTTE'S WEB(1952), and his
third book for children, THE TRUMPET

OF THE SWAN, also won several
awards. The author of seventeen books
of prose and poetry, Mr. White received
many distinguished literary honors. In
1973 he was elected to the American
Academy of Arts and Letters.

Before Breakfast
"Where's Papa going with that ax?"
said Fern to her mother as they were
setting the table for breakfast.
"Out to the hog house," replied
Mrs. Arable. "Some pigs were born last
night."
"I don't see why he needs an ax,"
continued Fern, who was only eight.
"Well," said her mother, "one of the
pigs is a runt. It's very small and weak,
and it will never amount to anything. So
your father has decided to do away with
it."
