Ed Williams – Team Leader
As the number of weeks until competition dwindle, we can happily report that
UTAS16 has had its first on-track testing session! While it is later than we had
hoped, we are still way ahead of the progress comparative to 2015, meaning we
will finally have the chance to properly test and tune our vehicle prior to
competition this year.
It has been a difficult 2 months, with students undertaking exams, final year
honours presentations and thesis submissions. But even with the high workloads,
the team has managed to complete the essential systems required for the running
of the car. There was a lot of troubleshooting to do prior to the first running of
the car, as there always is with a car built from scratch, but once a few minor
issues were sorted out we could head out for our first running test out at the
Southern Tasmanian Kart Club track at Orielton.
While half of the team was out testing the vehicle, others were hard at work in
the UTAS workshop manufacturing components for systems we don’t require for
our initial vehicle testing procedures. With new systems like pneumatic paddle
shifting nearing completion, we are excited to get our initial setup done and move
onto more sophisticated tuning and our driver training program.
Wing and bodywork are also well on the way, and with exciting new concepts for
our aerodynamic designs we are very excited to get out on track with our
aerodynamic package. It is vital the aerodynamic and suspension systems work
well together, and as anyone in the racing business will tell you, getting this
combination right is a bit of a black art. This is why it is so important to have time
to focus on tuning the vehicle’s dynamics, and it is something we have not had
much time for in previous years. This year we will finally have the capability to
dedicate testing time to this, and this will allow us to get the most out of the
vehicle and show that UTAS Motorsport really can compete with the best teams
from around the country.
As the competition approaches the team are also working on the vehicle livery,
with the aim to have a striking and easily recognisable car that will showcase the
quality of the team’s hard work throughout the year. We are planning to do a
vehicle release night prior to us heading off to comp, so stay tuned for details on
this!

Team Leader

Adam Flower – Head Engineer
(Combustion)

The last month has been the same typical post-exam
scramble to the finish line. We officially completed our first
test 4 weeks ahead of competition, which is at least double
that of what we’ve had in previous years.
However, the car is far from complete, and the team is split
between getting the car tested and completing the vehicle
for competition. As usual our first test session involved more
breaking than testing, with a long list of things that required
modifying straight away. Our second test was more
consistent with minimal failures, giving us confidence that
our car is close to the reliable state required for the weeks of
testing ahead. All that remains is to get out on track as
frequently as we can prior to competition!

Combustion Head Engineer
