The Stanley Kubrick challenge for Hamilton!
Stanley Kubrick is best known for his unique cinematography, attention to details to achieve realism and
an inspired use of music scores. In 1968, he gave the world 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), a sciencefiction film which director Steven Spielberg called his generation’s “big bang,” with innovative visual
effects and scientific realism. Kubrick was known for exerting complete artistic control over his projects;
in doing so, he re-conceived the genres in which he worked. For Odyssey, Kubrick commissioned
Hamilton to create timepieces to be worn by astronauts of the future.
John Bergey of Hamilton created and presented to him a futuristic digital clock and analog/digital
wristwatch. Sylvain Dolla, Hamilton International’s CEO says, “When he approached the brand to create
something so extraordinary and different for this film, the executives rose to the challenge. That is what
Hamilton has been doing ever since: overcoming challenges with innovation.” The brand has created
extraordinary pieces with American spirit, successfully capturing the strength and resilience of armed
forces with its Aviation, Navy and Field ranges.
The futuristic Odyssee designs caught the attention of the world and were given extensive coverage by
leading lifestyle and fashion publications including Vogue and Esquire. People started demanding for
these watches but the prohibitive cost of production made it impossible to commercialize this design.
They did not release the prop version to the public, but did produce an interpretation that is entirely
different but beautiful watch to the public, the “Odyssee 2001,” spelled differently for apparent
copyright issues. In 2006, Hamilton released ‘X-01’ a limited edition representation of the original movie
watch and in 2009, the futuristic, unconventional ‘ODCX-02’! Find your Hamilton today.
