LAPD Watts Bears keep kids off the street; in need of tutors, learning
materials
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1, 2016 – The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is fighting gangviolence with football. The Watts Bears keeps children from the poorest area of LA off the
streets by keeping them in the classroom and on the field for the summer. While their football
equipment is often donated by sports enthusiasts and other charities, there is a severe lack of
summer tutors and learning materials to help the players learn.
The Watts Bears Summer Academy is looking for qualified individuals to volunteer their time a
few hours a week during the summer months to teach lessons in English, science, math and
history. Additionally, study materials are always needed: notebooks, folders, pencils, new or
used text books, etc. Interested volunteers can use the contact information below for more
information. A background check is mandatory for all volunteers.
The Bears are currently taught by a handful of volunteers and the four LAPD officers who serve
as coaches. Although well-intentioned, none of them are professional educators. Hard-working
and determined, the Bears deserve the best education they can get.
About the LAPD Watts Bears
The Watts Bears is a charity organization run by four LAPD officers with hopes of keeping kids
in the classroom and on the field, instead of on the streets. Bears players must maintain hard
work on the field, and a certain standard in school. For more information visit
