Media Alert: LAPD Watts Bears in need of volunteer summer tutors, learning materials
Dec. 1, 2016 8:02 p.m. PST
Who: The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Watts Bears is a charity organization that
takes children from underprivileged neighborhoods and puts them into an afterschool program
focusing on football and school work. The Bears must maintain a 3.0 average GPA in school,
attend summer classes and show hard work and dedication on the field.
What: The Bears are in need of qualified, experienced volunteer tutors for their Watts Bears
Summer Academy to teach lessons in English, science, math and history. All volunteers are
required to undergo a background check by the LAPD. School supplies donations are also
always needed, including: notebooks, folders, pencils, new or used text books, etc. The media is
invited to a press conference and meet and Greet with the Watts Bears players (aged eight to 14)
and coaches, to advertise our need for volunteers in their media outlets.
When: Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016
5 p.m. – Press Conference
5:45 – 7:30 Meet and Greet with players and coaches
Where: Locke High School Auditorium
325 E. 111th St.
Los Angeles, CA, 90061
Why: The Watts Bears believe that the best way to end violence is through education. By giving
the Bears the best possible education, as well as giving them a safe and positive outlet for stress
on the field, we believe that we can keep our kids out of gang violence and lead them to be their
best selves. With the help of the media the Bears have hope of attracting the most qualified and
experienced volunteers.
How: Please contact Madison Wood, contact below, for more information on the press
conference, volunteering for the LAPD Watts Bears Summer Academy or to donate learning
materials.

About the LAPD Watts Bears:
The Watts Bears is a charity organization run by four LAPD officers with hopes of keeping kids
in the classroom and on the field, instead of on the streets. Bears players must maintain hard
work on the field, and a certain standard in school. For more information visit
