Periodontal diseases range from simple gum
inflammation to serious disease that results in major
damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the
teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.
Tartar, called calculus dent tense in Latin, is plaque that has
hardened on your teeth. Tartar can also form at and below
the gum line and can irritate gum tissue. Tartar gives plaque
more surface area to grow and a much stickier surface,
which can lead to more serious conditions, such as cavities
and gum disease.
