THE CULTURE OF FILM IS TRAVELLING FROM THE SOUTH
ALL OVER THE WORLD THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL
DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL OF IERAPETRA.

Τhe

International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra Awards, already in its 3rd edition,
will be held in Ierapetra between 6-10 August.
This year the festival is dedicated to people with disabilities, who have outdone themselves in
their daily lives and many of them became heroes with worldwide fame. It will also welcome
new filmmakers, new directors, who will capture a more modern, lighter, more spontaneous and
promising picture of life through their own eyes.
This year, images and sounds, landscapes and people will travel from all corners of the world to
the south, arriving at the town of Ierapetra, where everything will turn into scenes and emotions
on the film canvas.
Through the endless preliminary process involving 899 applications from Greek and foreign
directors, 100 documentaries were selected, to “light up” the Festival with events and tributes
to people and countries from all over the world. Many cities of the Lasithi prefecture will host
parallel events of the festival promoting the culture of film. Apart from Ierapetra, there will be
screenings at the Lassithi Plateau, Makris Gialos, Kavousi and Myrtos.

As soon as the festival of Ierapetra comes to an end, it will spread its wings and travel to Greece
and all over the world, transmitting to its audience all the emotions evoked by the document . Thus,
the festival will participate in the dedicated events of “Greece in Russia, Russia in Greece, 2016,”
with documentaries of Cultural Content.
In addition, the Festival will also host the «Greeks Abroad Festival» with young directors in order to
contribute to the promotion of Greeks abroad, living in different parts of the world, the living proof
of a strong Greek presence in different countries. The best short documentaries shall receive
awards.
The artistic director Ms Eleni Vlassi invites you to be part of the festival screenings and the opening
ceremony on Saturday 6 August at 9 o’ clock at the Town Hall Square (Paraliaki Plateia Dimarhiou)
of Ierapetra and at the closing ceremony on August 10 at 9 at the Town Hall Square (Paraliaki
Plateia Dimarhiou) of Ierapetra.

QUALIFYING COMMITTEE
ELENI VLASSI
Eleni Vlassi has been the artistic director of the
International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra
(Awards) since its first edition in 2014.
She is a journalist, member of the Journalists'
Union of Athens Daily Newspapers and of the
“European Documentary Network”. She has worked
on television as a journalist, presenter, chief editor
(for Alter, Extra, as a freelancer for Mega, ERT and
foreign channels) and was employed for 12 years
by "Vradini" newspaper. She has been involved in
directing and producing several documentaries in
Greece and across the world. Her films have participated in Thessaloniki
International Documentary Festival, Chalkida International Documentary
Festival and the Mediterranean Documentary Festival “MEDIMED” in
Barcelona. Among her best-known titles are: "The Land of the Weeping
Gods", "A god is born," "Olive Roads", "Gold", "In the shadow of Atlas",
"Without Motherland", "Dimitris Liantinis", "Dominica" "Guadeloupe", "Series
of 20 documentaries on Morocco, 15 documentaries on Jordan, 7 on the
Azores, 4 on the Caribbean", etc.
FANIS DOUSKOS
Fanis Douskos was born in Kouklioi, in the
regional unit of Ioannina. He studied Direction and
Photography at Hellenic Cinema and Television
School Stavrakos (1971-1973) and at
Papantonopoulou School of Cinema and
Television (1967-1970). He worked for 30
consecutive years as a filmmaker on Greek
Television (ERT SA). He has worked on many
documentaries in Greece and abroad, among
which:“Greeks in May 1968”, “Istanbul: the great persecution of ‘55”, “Ancient
Messina: the revelation of the City of Sculptures”, “Nikos Svoronos”,
“Solomos of the Greeks”, “Literature of the Resistance”, “Nikos Poulantzas”,
“Nikos Mandilaras” and “Berlin: Capital of Culture”.

PHILIPPOS NIKOLOPOULOS
He is a professor of Sociology, an author and a
lawyer, but is also interested in literature. He is a
member of the Greek Philosophical Society, the
Greek Authors’ Society, the Scientific Council of the
Environment and Sustainability Chamber and CEO of
the International Centre for Historical, Social and
Political Research (DIKIPOKE). He is also an
academic in the field of Sociology, an author and a
lawyer.

JURY

ANTONIS KOKKINOS
Graduate of the School of Civil Engineering of the
National Technical University of Athens. He has also
studied Direction at Hellenic Cinema and Television
School Stavrakos.

YANNIS SOLDATOS
Author, director and publisher Yannis Soldatos
was born in Lefkada in 1952. He is founder and
director of "Aigokeros" publishing house, which
has published more than 200 books on cinema
and more than 400 literary books. He also
authored several books: "In the constellation of
Aries," "Scary stories" "Martial stories", "The
Riddle", "Eve, the lover of vampires," "The error," "Underwater
Love".

MENOS DELIOTZAKIS
Graduate of the School of Civil Engineering of
the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and
Director of Hellenic Cinema and Television
School Stavrakos.
He has been working in film, television and
theater since 1990. Today, he is Head of ERT’s Greek
Programming Department. He is also a member of the Film
Committee and president of the Committee of International Coproductions.

CHRISTOFOROS CHARALAMPAKIS
Professor of Linguistics at the School of
Philosophy, Faculty of Philology,
Department of Linguistics at the University
of Athens.

NICK KAVOUKIDIS
Nick Kavoukidis is one of the last great
Greek filmmakers. The son of pioneer
filmmaker George Kavoukidis, he has
dedicated more than fifty years to Greek
cinema. He is the Vice President of the
Greek Film Archive Foundation, a honorary member of the Greek
Directors Guild, of ETEKT and of the Greek Society of
Cinematographers.
