Tips on Maintaining your Electric Forklift
Due to increasing fuel prices, most forklift users are moving to electric forklifts. This means one
has topurchase a rechargeable battery for the forklift, which can last up to 5 years or more, if
used properly. A new battery costs around a third of the cost of a new forklift. Another option is
to get a new or used electric forklift for sale from dealers in Atlanta to replace your fuel
powered lift truck. That being done, you need to maintain your battery well to maximize it’s
life. A few important tips are given below on how to maintain your battery.
Buy the Right Battery
Firstly, you need to purchase the right battery for your forklift. If your forklift is heavy duty, you
need to get a heavy-duty battery that can handle the load that the forklift is expected to carry.
Otherwise, you may be under-utilizing the forklift if it has a small battery. Besides that, the
battery may get damaged quickly because it is not used in the correct machine. Similarly, a
small forklift must have a relatively small battery which can handle its capacity. So, it is
important to ensure that the battery size matches the capacity of the lift truck.
Fully Recharge Your Battery
The battery should be recharged till it is full to ensure that it operates at full capacity during its
working hours. Fast charging is not advisable as the rate of battery discharge is also increased.
The heat produced during fast charging can damage the battery and reduce its life. This must
be done only in an emergency otherwise you can work around the battery charging time.
Ensure that the battery has 8 hours of charging time before it can be used. Also, note that the
battery should be charged not more than once per day.
Add Water When Required
Always check your water levels after charging the battery and if it is low, add some distilled
water. Allowing the water in the forklift battery cells to run low can lead to drying of the battery
minerals and this permanently damages the battery. Therefore, you must ensure that your
water level is always high, but also do not overfill the water because it will overflow, damaging
the battery again. Refill should be done after a couple of charges.
Do Not Run It at Low Capacity
When the battery is on low capacity i.e. 20% and below, this can result in the lift truck being
damaged. This is because when the battery is running low the forklift is no longer operating
with its optimum speed and discharging becomes faster. So, when lift truck battery capacity is
low it is advisable to charge it before it runs flat then use it again. This will ensure longer life of
the battery and lift truck.
