BY CRAIG HODGKINS

I

T’S OFTEN A CHALLENGE
for print publications to
compete with “real-time”
communications channels for
stories that may be considered timely,
but just in case you haven’t been
surfing the Internet the past couple
of weeks for the latest buzz from the
2016 SHOT Show, have I got some
news for you!
Seriously, though, it is always an exhausting pleasure to walk the miles of
aisles at SHOT. Even though the National Shooting Sports Foundation
(NSSF) publishes a thorough show directory, and provides an outstanding smartphone app (one that kept me from getting
lost multiple times), I’m one of those
“serendipitous discovery” people who enjoys stumbling upon booths and listening
to the show buzz.
The first surprise I heard actually
came during Industry Day at the Range,
which is always held the day before
SHOT begins in earnest. Industry Day is
just about the only time, other than at
special events at various local ranges,
where the media and others can actually
test the products in the way they were designed. In other words, it is just about the
only time during the week of SHOT that
we get to shoot at stuff.
The buzz was about the new K6s pistol
from Kimber, a company that’s already
known and respected for their quality

1911s and rifles. A handful of our writers
and editors shot it, and each came away
impressed. It is double action only, and
will come in .357 Magnum and .38 SPL.
It sports an internal hammer, and weighs
(empty) a mere 23 ounces. You’ll see it reviewed in these pages as soon as we can
get one in our hands.
The next surprise I heard an uncharacteristic number of people talking about
came on Day One of the show. The product wasn’t even a “gun” at all, at least not
one that some people (at least the purists
among us) would call a gun in the traditional sense. It doesn’t shoot bullets or
pellets. It shoots arrows.
Longtime air gun innovator Crossman
debuted the Benjamin Pioneer Airbow at
the show, and they are classifying the
bow as belonging in an all-new category
of big game weapons. This “bow” does not
come with a string. Instead, this easycocking weapon (the mechanism can be
operated with a mere two fingers) shoots
full-length arrows and full-length broadheads at 450 fps. Powered by 3000 psi of
compressed air and sporting a long Picatinny rail up top, the Pioneer Airbow
may provide the company with a
crossover success.
That’s only two surprises of many,
but we’ll continue to share and review
as many of them as we can over the
coming year. GW

Your 7.62 AR

WITH 7.62 AR STYLE RIFLES INCREASING IN POPULARITY,
SO ARE THE ACCESSORIES THAT GO WITH THEM
TEXT BY TIM STETZER, PHOTOS BY JIM HOLMAN

A

LTHOUGH THE 7.62X51MM AR-10 design
predates the 5.56x45mm AR-15, it’s the AR-15s
in all their myriad of variants that shooters
have become most familiar with over the years.
Much of this has to do with the relatively limited use that
military AR-10s saw in the world, with its largest user being
Sudan back in the late 1950s.
Civilian models of the AR-10 really didn’t start popping up until
Armalite brought out a civilian variant in 1995. Over the years
other companies have brought out various 7.62 NATO AR rifles but

8

GUN WORLD | APRIL 2016 | www.gunworld.com

for a long while there were a couple of different standards as far
as magazines and parts went, so the heavy caliber ARs stayed
somewhat elusive.
Much like the old VHS/Beta video wars of the 70s and 80s,
the 7.62 AR debate seems to be settling in on the Stoner/
DPMS magazine pattern rifles becoming the predominant style.
With that seemingly settled it seems like more and more
companies are treading into the 7.62 waters and you’re starting
to see more expansion into accessories geared towards these
heavier rifles as well.

The Burris AR-536 is a 5x magnified and illuminated optic designed for use with both 5.56 and
7.62 pattern rifles. It’s effective out to 600 meters and comes with a Fastfire 2 red dot sight
mounted for close quarters use.

After adding a Cryptic
Coatings bolt carrier
assembly, FAB Defense
stocks, a Burris AR-536
optic and some aftermarket magazines, the
author’s 7.62 AR was
ready to roll.

The bulky M-4 handguards were replaced with a set of lightweight and trim FAB Defense
FGR-3 Tri-rail handguards that allow easy mounting of lights and fore grips.

BASE GUN
For my first venture into a 7.62 AR, I
started by grabbing a complete lower assembly
from Palmetto State Armory. Their PA-10s are
comparatively new, but I’d had good luck with
their AR-15 lowers in the past, so I grabbed
one on sale. At $190 shipped for a “blemish”
lower I figured it was a great way to get into
the 7.62 AR game.
When the receiver arrived, I was at a loss to

see what the blemish was, but I’ll take their
word that something didn’t live up to PSA’s
cosmetic quality standards. Being that this gun
is going to be a user, I’m probably going to
ding it up anyway, though, so it didn’t matter
too much to me one way or another.
The lower half consisted of the receiver, a
MilSpec buffer tube and basic M-4 stock, an
M16A2 pistol grip and standard fire control
parts.

I had initially planned on getting a flattop upper with a free float barrel and some
sort of rail system. As it happened though,
PSA got me again with a great sale on a
standard carbine style upper for around
$260 or so, if I recall right.
I ended up with a standard M-4 style
upper in .308 with a 16-inch barrel, A2
flash hider, standard A2 front sight post,
flat-top upper and CAR style handguards.
