Bill Wilson, who has been into guns since the
1960s, also had a successful competition shooting career.

S I OPENED THE BOOK,
I glanced to my right.
The unobstructed view from
the window of the Boeing
737-800 was spectacular. I
could see for miles and miles.
In the distance, I was sure I saw utopia.
Like a boa winding crookedly through the
grass, I saw a trail that meandered through an
unblemished meadow. This perfect running
course ultimately led to a steep hill, where I
imagined running to the top of the pine covered
mountain.
It’s easy to get lost at 35,000 feet while staring
out the window, as the plane darts through the
sky at more than 500 miles per hour. But the
appeal of the words on the pages pulled me back.
While at the 2016 NRA Annual Meetings,
Bill Wilson had given me an autographed copy of
his book. I was about to enter his compelling
world, as revealed in Gun Guy, and nothing was
going to stop me today.

A

START OF THE JOURNEY
“Here’s a brick of .22 shells and a rifle. Don’t
put your eye out.”
After handing his son the shells and rifle and
providing the unambiguous warning, Bill Wilson’s

dad most likely stepped back and admired his
8-year-old son. Bill, who had been lobbying for
a gun for a couple of years, probably couldn’t
believe what he was holding.
“What kind of parent just turns his child
loose with a gun?” says Bill. “Well, back in those
days in the South, pretty much every parent! It
was a rite of passage and literally not a big deal.
“And, the odd thing was, when young people
were entrusted with firearms, there wasn’t mayhem in the streets. School shootings, huge numbers of accidental shootings … those things just
didn’t happen. Instead, young people, and I
include myself here, learned responsibility. Tell
me that isn’t a better society than the one we
have today.”
To be sure, the owner of Wilson Combat
knows life is different these days, and maybe he
yearns for those early days. At the very least, he
certainly remembers them fondly—and you know
they cross his mind from time to time. Like this.
“When you ran out of critters to shoot, if it
was that time of year when the walnuts were
hanging from the trees, then they were the
preferred targets,” he says of those days. “Nothing was more fun than shooting walnuts out
of trees.”
That was life in rural Arkansas.
THE SIMPLE LIFE
Today, you’ll find Bill and his wife, Joyce,
on their ranch in Texas. This gun guy gets to
Wilson Combat once or twice a month, but
these days, after building his firearms empire,
he prefers his magnificent, 8,746-acre ranch.
Besides, the company is in good hands.
“Life is good in Texas, and it’s good to finally
be a Texan,” he says.
Spoken like a true “Gun Guy.” GW

DESERT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT’S
D3-9SD CARBINE ENGAGES QUICKLY,
PERFORMS FLAWLESSLY
STORY BY FRED MASTISON PHOTOS BY STRAIGHT 8

W

ITH A WIDE SPECTRUM OF GUNS AVAILABLE,
it's sometimes difficult to actually classify one as being
truly iconic. However, that rarified air is, indeed, reserved for
the submachine gun.
Even inside this very specific category, we find one special gun
that rises above all others: the integrally suppressed submachine gun. King in that class
is the H&K MP5SD.
For decades, this gun was the cornerstone of counterterrorism units across the world.
Easily recognized by even the most rookie of gun aficionados, the MP5SD is seen as the
gold standard for pistol-caliber full-auto capable weapons. For a plethora of reasons, this
gun has gone largely unchallenged.
However that has now changed, because Desert Design Development (D3) has
introduced what it believes to be a superior integrally suppressed submachine gun.
Say hello to the D3-9SD.

The Glock magazine well made
reloads fast and efortless.
