Fireworks and Celebrating the Lunar New Year
Several East and Central Asian countries traditionally celebrate the Lunar New Year with fireworks displays
showering the holiday festivities. This year, the Lunar New Year is on Saturday January 28, 2017, and will be
celebrated over several days. State Fire Marshal Charles Duffy is reminding residents that “Fireworks are not
legal for sale or discharge during this holiday period without first obtaining a permit from the local fire authority
having jurisdiction.”
Lunar New Year celebrations take place throughout Washington State in a number of communities. To make
the most of your Lunar New Year holiday, check with your local fire authority to ensure proper fireworks codes
are followed.
For additional fireworks safety information visit the State Fire Marshal webpage at wsp.wa.gov/fire/firemars.htm
or the United States Fire Administration webpage at usfa.fema.gov.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is a Bureau of the Washington State Patrol, providing fire and life safety services
to the citizens of Washington State including inspections of state licensed facilities, plan review of school
construction projects, licensing of fire sprinkler contractors and pyrotechnic operators, training Washington
States firefighters, and collecting emergency response data.
