UVAC and I responded to the Kessek Training Room at the Memorial Gym for a
report of a subject with a possible broken jaw. I found UMaine basketball
player Marko Pirovic 3/9/15 holding his jaw and was bleeding. He was being
assisted by several trainers.
I was told that he had fallen in the shower. I noticed he was fully dressed in
sweats and his hair wasn't wet. Due to the injury, Pirovic was unable to tell
me what had happened. I questioned two other players that were in the area. I
was told that Pirovic was alone in the shower. I also talked to Coach Walsh
about the possibility of Pirovic being assaulted. He stated that he wasn't
aware of any issues that Pirovic was having with other players.
I will be contacting Pirovic tomorrow to ask what exactly happened.

Supplement Report #17U-00976
On 02/14/2017 at 12:22 pm, Sgt. Curtis responded to assist with an
ambulance call at the Memorial Gym training room. The caller advised that the
patient possibly sustained a broken jaw.
Curtis arrived and spoke with the trainers (Ryan Taylor) who stated that
they were told by members of the men's basketball team that the patient who was
later identified as Marco Pirovic, reported to have fallen in the shower.
Curtis made note that Pirovic was fully dressed and his hair/body was dry.
Curtis spoke with some players that were present and was told by them that
Pirovic was alone in the shower when he fell.
Curtis also spoke with the head coach (Bob Walsh) who indicated that he was
unaware of any issues between the players that would lead to an assault.
At this point, Pirovic was transported to EMMC for his injury.
On 02/15/2017, I was notified by Chief LaCroix that there was information
that indicated that Pirovic was struck in the face by another player causing the
injury. I was also advised that Pirovic sustained a severely broken jaw and
required surgery to repair the damage. LaCroix requested that I follow up with
the incident to ascertain as to whether or not an assault had in fact occurred.
I met with the head trainer at the Memorial Gym (Ryan Taylor). He went on
to tell me that the team was at UNH for a game and would not be returning until
the following day. Taylor told me that he was in the training office at the
time of the incident. He stated that just prior to the incident, Pirovic had
come to the training room with a bloody nose he sustained accidentally at
practice. Taylor stopped the bleeding and Pirovic left the office. A short
time later, Pirovic returned to Ryans office holding his face. Taylor noted a
lot of blood but initially thought it was from the bloody nose that Pirovic got
earlier. Taylor then looked closer at Pirovic and noted that it was a different
injury and that upon inspection, it was obvious to him that Pirovic had broken
his jaw. He also noted several teeth that were loose or missing. It was at
this point that UVAC ambulance was notified.
Taylor told me that the other
players had advised him that Pirovic had fallen in the shower. Taylor told me
that he was fairly certain at the time that Pirovic had been struck by
At this point Taylor told me that he had received a phone call from Kaitlyn
(assistant trainer) from New Hampshire. She was the trainer traveling with the
team. She had told Taylor that one of the players (Wes Myers) had talked to
coach Walsh and told him that he and Pirovic got into an altercation in the
locker room and that he struck Pirovic in the face, causing the broken jaw.
Due to the fact that the team was in New Hampshire, I could not make
contact with any of the parties involved until their return to campus.
On 02/16/17 at 11:48 am, I met with Pirovic at his apartment located at 55
Bradbury Street in Old Town. With him was his girlfriend (Maddie Cummings) and
his parents (Vesna and Robert Pirovic). Marko's parents had made the trip from
Toronto to make sure Marko was okay. Due to the fact that Marko had his jaw
wired shut, I was unable to interview him. I asked him to write out a statement
of what happened and advised him I would pick it up when he completed it. I was
advised by Marko's parents that he sustained 2 bilateral fractures in his jaw
that required 2.5 hour surgery (EMMC) and his jaw being wired shut for 6-8
weeks. They told me that they understood that Marko had been in a mutual
altercation with a teammate and stated they were not interested in pursuing the
matter. I advised them that we would conduct an investigation and after
gathering all the pertinent information, we would then determine the direction
of the case. I left my card and cell # with them and told them to call with any
After speaking with Pirovic, I met with staff and players at the Memorial
Gym. I was told by all involved that Marko and Wes were in the locker room with
4 other teammates. Marko was listening to his music when Wes asked him to turn
it off. Marko refused. Wes got up and tried to turn Marko's music off. They
started arguing and then grabbed each other and wrestled for a bit when the
other team members broke it up. The two men continued to argue and started to
push each other. Both men began to swing fists at each other. Wes struck Marko
one time in the jaw causing Marko's injury. The altercation immediately stopped
when it was apparent the Marko was injured. Marko then ran into the trainers
office for treatment. Initially, Marko, Wes and the other players present
decided to say that Marko fell in the shower to avoid any consequences that may
come up from the incident.
Written statements were taken from all parties involved and are attached to
this report. It should be noted that Marko indicated to me that this is a
common occurrence that got out of hand and that no one was at fault. He stated
that he has no interest in going further with this case as both men were to
blame. As noted in Marko's written statement, "At this point I want this all be
over with and I'm not looking to pursue this case in any way".
I have forwarded a copy of this report along with the written statements to
the conduct office (David Fiacco) for their review.
Nothing further at this time.
