Looks who’s new at the zoo!! This handsome young lemur recently found his
forever home with HPZS, and is already enjoying his new family. When state officially
contacted us desperately looking for a new home for this 7-month-old Ring-Tailed
Lemur (Lemur Catta), we were happy to help. With four other Ring-Tailed Lemurs already
residing as a family unit here at HPZS, he would be able to join the existing group.

Ring-Tailed Lemurs are a matriarchal family group known as “Troops”. Their
family groups may include up to 30 animals in the wild. Both sexes live in troops, but
a dominant female presides over all. Here at HPZS the family troop consists of Father
“Fio”, Mother “Crash”, and their offspring, “Bungie and “Kinsa”.

Ring-Tailed Lemurs are primates traditionally found on the African island of
Madagascar. They are endangered, however, largely because the sparse, dry forests
they love are quickly vanishing.

Like many family units, lemurs aren’t always accepting of newcomers to
their group. The process of acclimating this new lemur to the family group was a slow
one, but thankfully, with careful, tireless work from our animal care staff, he has been
successfully accepted into the lemur family and is adjusting well.

Although he is still young, he is almost the size of the adult lemurs, which
can make spotting him on exhibit a bit of a challenge. Even so, make sure to come
say hello to our newest addition on your next visit – he will be the spunky, friendly one,
bouncing around (like a human toddler) with bounds of energy!

Therapy Bunnies Visit Senior Care Homes
This last winter, two of our docents, Jane and Judy, started a program to bring our
lovable rabbits to group and senior care homes throughout the Prescott area. We
didn’t exactly know how it would be received, but what a hit it has been! Not only has it
been great to share these animals with people who might not otherwise get to experience them, but it’s been a great way to share our stories and mission with different
parts of this community.

To begin, Jane and Judy started training the rabbits to handle that type of
social interaction. Most of them are already pretty docile as it is, but making sure that
they could handle these groups took a lot of preparation and care. Then they set up
event dates at different facilities and visited with these groups. And since its inception
only a few months ago, they’ve already done countless programs and met with hundreds of people. The residents have been very receptive to the program and it’s been
a real treat sharing our bunnies with them - who wouldn’t love petting these adorable
animals?!

As both Jane and Judy are volunteers at the zoo, they do not get paid to
do this type of outreach; nor do we charge the facilities anything for this program it’s simply out of their love for the animals and their desire to share them with our
community that they do it. It goes without saying that it’s volunteers like these that
make our organization what it is.

Support the Animals by Donating to Our Yard Sale!

Each year, HPZS holds a yard sale fundraiser that supports
the animal care and education programs we have here at
the sanctuary. This year, it will be happening March 31 - April
2, 2017, from 9 am - 4 pm, in the Pence Pavilion here
at Heritage Park Zoo. Right now, we need your help
to make this the most successful event yet! Your taxdeductible donations can be dropped off any day of the
week (10 am - 4 pm), or for larger items we can arrange
a pickup. If you have unwanted or unused items just taking up space, bring them to us - it’s the easiest way to support your favorite animals!
We’re so appreciative of this community’s support we couldn’t do all that we do without your help!

For those interested in attending the yard sale, you’ll be
able to enter at a gate next to the Pavilion and browse
without paying any admission.

It’s Baby Animal Season!

Become a HPZS Member!

Every spring, we receive an influx of baby animal “rescues”. And
as well-intentioned as it is when people bring them in, it’s often
times unnecessary. Our conservation plea is this: when you see
baby animals alone in the wild, unless they’re noticeably injured, please let them be. The reaction can be to think they’ve
been abandoned and to take them in and help them. The reality is that many times their mother is nearby and they’re being
left for a reason. Handling them often does more harm than
help; it makes it harder to integrate them back into the wild.

HPZS members enjoy a year of free admission, reduced
admission for special events, 10% gift shop discount,
newsletters and discounts to a number of other zoos and
aquariums. If you sign up today, we will apply the admission
you paid towards the cost of your new membership.

We’re happy to provide triage and/or homes for these animals
when the need arises, but many times you’re better off leaving
the babies where they are. If you do have questions, please
don’t be afraid to call us or the Arizona Department of Game
& Fish. We’ll happily discuss the situation or come out to investigate if need be.

card when visiting. It will get you through
the front gates more quickly!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Becky Salazar
It requires many helping hands to operate the Sanctuary. Many staff members and volunteers work
behind the scenes to ensure a great deal of work gets done. Becky Salazar is our Membership &
Volunteer Coordinator here at HPZS. It is not often we get to hear their wonderful passion, talent and
dedication to their work. Thank you Becky!!
How did you come to be a part of Heritage Park Zoo? By making a tragic mistake! We have Javelina
all around my house, and one weekend we had family visiting and I gave my small grandsons some
vegetables to throw off our deck to feed them. Two large Javelina began arguing over the food and
one of them stepped on and severely injured a baby. I spent two hours calling every rescue group I
could find, but never thought of the zoo. Finally, a friend called HPZS and they said they could rescue
it. It felt like the weight of the world was lifted from my shoulders. The next week I saw an article in the
paper stating the zoo needed volunteers and the rest was history! Being a part of HPZS has taught
me so much about wildlife.
What is your role with the sanctuary? Along with coordinating the volunteer and membership
programs here, I also do odd (office) jobs that we don’t have staff to cover. Working for an animal
sanctuary and a non-profit, you never know what you’ll encounter on a daily basis!
What’s the most interesting thing about your job(s) here? Being part of the “behind the scenes” stuff.
I love being in on it!
What’s one thing you think is important that people know about the sanctuary? That we are not
funded by city, state, or federal monies. We exist on what we can bring in on our own. I think that’s
huge and everyone should be aware of it.
Do you have a favorite animal at the zoo? Yes, Cassie (Bengal Tiger). But don’t tell the other animals!
